Clones A question for the CDN gurus JIT / Okotoks etc.

Can shorthorn or shorthorn plus clones or their progeny or embryos from the US be imported, registered, shown, etc. in Canada?
CLRC says talk to Dept of Ag
Their web site is not clear on this and refers to a 2003 paper on novel foods??????
This was discussed today at the Markham Shorthorn show and no one had an answer.
Can't call Dept of Ag today.

Any comments?????

As far as I know, it is not possible to register a clone in Canada... in any breed. At least that was the case about a year ago. I have heard that there are some Holstien clones in Ontario that were clones from a high dollar cow and they have been trying to get the government to change the rules so they could be registered. Like I said, the last I heard on this subject was that they could not be registered.

I will have to check into this more, and I will let you know what I find out. I have been expecting someone in Canada to buy the progeny of a clone and find out that they cannot be registered or shown in Canada.

I have no idea why the government is so opposed to this, but as far as I know they have been saying a flat "NO WAY" to anything to do with clones.Maybe time will mellow them. Gotta love them bureaucrats!

It is not possible and is actually a federal offence to bring direct cloned genetics into Canada if I understand the laws correctly. It would make my life a pile easier and my business stronger if we could. Bringing progeny off of cloned animals is not regulated against.
I do not see clones genetics being a threat to our industry.

Ag Canada does not allow the importing or registering of cloned animals or their offspring at this time. Clones or their offspring cannot be used for food either. I have no idea if they plan on changing this policy.

My Holstein source here in Ontario tells me that the cloned Holsteins are not even allowed to be milked for human conception.
