So i had a feed salesman approach me wanting the business for my show steer feed. I gave him my recipe and he came in a little cheaper than the other mill i was using so i gave him a shot. When he delivered it the cottonseed hulls had been replaced with something called hull pellets. I'm wondering if the pellets have the same feed value as hulls? When i asked him about it he said the hulls are a pain to mix so this was there standard practice.

I'd say he was just cutting corners and costs. If they are such a pain how come every major feed manufacturer out there uses them?

Oh no they are a pain to work with in a feed mill. They won't flow, too bulky, won't mix in well. Same way with liquid molasses is a pain but worse!! You'll get more of what you want using the CSH, not the pellets.

It's hard to find places that will mix the loose hulls because of the extra labor costs involved in cleaning everything they touch when they mix with molasses. I spent a LOT of time cleaning legs, mixers, elevatores because of this. The hulls make the feed much more palatable in my opinion, all the loose fines stick to them and there is more ruffage and fill to them than the pelleted version. Big difference to me.

I had the same problem with my mill, they will not mix my ration if I insist on the hulls and NOT the pellets, because it clogs up the system. So, they now mix my feed without that part of the ration, and I buy bagged hulls, and add them myself when I get them home. It is a little bit of a pain, but actually works out good because some of our show heifers need more fill, so I just give them more hulls than the rest.
