need to settle a dispute. I have a Hardcore x Iceman x Foreplay heifer that will be bred this spring. Hubby & nephew are set on Dirty Harry. I want gigolo Joe. Has anyone used Harry on 1st calf heifers? If so how did it work out? I see he has no EPD's so can't compare that. Since out of Ali is said to be any easy calver.

Any help?

Red,

We have our first Dirty Harry on the ground two days old.  He is out of a first calf Northern Improvement X Maine.  We assisted her only because she didnt want to lay down.  EASY pull with 65 pound bull calf.  We have another one due on Monday to him.  Will keep you posted.

I bred 2 1st calf heifers for a neighbor, 1 Sunseeker, 1 Manchild, both caled unassisted. Cousin had had 2 last time that I talked to him, both 1st calf heifers, both calved unassisted. These were all DH calves. I think that there is more 1st hand support for using DH as of yet. I have heifers bred to both bulls Cathy, but our 1st one is not due until 3/27. I will give you more info later.

Just finishing up calving 15 heifers all to Dirty Harry and must say I'm impressed and will be using him again this year.  12 came unassisted, 2 were light assists, and 1 came c-section.  The c-section was for a 65 lb. calf with a leg back in a small heifer that we couldn't get corrected and I blame it more on the heifer's lack of pelvic size than the sire.  That calf was one of the small ones as our calving weights range from 65-75 mostly with 1 or 2 pushing 80-85.  As a group, these calves look more marketable at this time than any set of Ali or Angus sired calves we've had in the past.  Several of the heifers will show and I expect some of the bull calves to be marketable as well.  They have a tick more bone, hair, and look than most low BW calves we've had.

Since we showed a heifer by DH that we bred, we have had a little bit of inside scoop from a few people. His calves, in general, come very easy, but there is a small chance of getting something a little bigger ( like 85/90lbs) on big BW mothers.  Ours was out of a heatwave show heifer that was feed well and the hiefer calf was around 75. Alot of people are very happy with the DH calves, they have more hair and power then a lot of Ali's, in my opinion.

Cathy,  I have been hearing very good things about Dirty Hairy as well as some positive things about Joe.  I think you will get the calving ease with both but possibly more look with the DH!  From what I've been told the Joe calves take a little time and they start looking real good.

Not sure who Veritas is  (welcome), I heard a very similar report about DH from a well respected breeder from Iowa just the other day.  It sounds like DH is the real deal!

I hope any of you thinking of using Dirty Harry, won't hesitate because some of these testimonials have reported "pulls" on first calf heifers. The genetics of the heifer has as much to do with "calving ease" as the bull. As Carrie has stated,we have 3 first calf heifers bred to him,our neighbors have calved 20 first calf already this spring, with NO pulls. I got the Firestorm started on JPJ about 3 years ago, mostly because the shorthorn breed didn't have a copnsistant bull for calving ease, that could be dependent on,especially for "Club Calf purposes. As most has found out JPJ has proven to be far more useful to the shorthorn breed and for "clubby applications"than some folks would have believed. Most have admitted they were mistaken. I believe in DIRTY HARRY also,he will be far more usefull than just as a"Calving Ease"bull. He already has sired numerous female champions all across America, from county to some of the toughest "STATE" shows around. I sold one to Oklahoma that has had her first calf and it was reported back to be a good mother that milks well, despite having" Strictly Business" blood running through it's veins. As another post on this thread has stated,Dirty Harry calves are consistantly more uniform, with adequate bone, muscle, vigo rand absolutely more hair than ANY other calving ease bull that I have ever used. This is including JPJ!!! My experience dates back nearly 50 years breeding and showing Registered Angus,Shorthorns,Maines and a ton of crossbreds. Although Major's Money man is and has been a great Maine bull,as was his sire,Waldo,he has always been great for calving ease, but he does not stampout the "Look" as much as Harry has proven to do so far. Use with confidence!! NO I DO NOT HAVE A FINANCIAL INTEREST IN THIS BULL WHATSOEVER!!! Also, for any one's information I don't jump on any bull's bandwagon, without first seeing calves out of him and then trying him on our own. No bull works for everybody, but he is more than worth trying. As most of you that read my posts have seen there is another bull that I have been asked to help promote.Never in my wildest dreams have I ever thought I would promote an Angus bull. WHY? because there are so many of them out there that works for what ever purpose or the other.GOOD bulls. But there is a Angus bull that works well for breeders of registered cattle, and he works wonders for Maine and Simmy crosses. He was used by two very respected herds this past year, one in NEBRASKA and one in KANSAS,his numbers will be out this fall and the projections for calving ease to weaning to yearling spreads are above average, with phenotype and structural correctness, when bred to sound cattle, phonomenal.Go to CATTLE IN MOTION.com and click on JAYCEE'S RAMBLIN FEVER,You will see him in pasture condition, daughters of him out of Angus cows, daughters of him out of crossbred cow's and sisters of his out of his mother. He is the real deal.My close friend DAN MAY raised this bull[Dan is BOB'S brother]down in Oklahoma. If any one wants to know the respected angus breeders that used this bull, along with semen inquiries, contact me on the pm. THANKS...JOHN,  TMJ Showcattle.

Hey Red - don't know if it matters, but I have alot of respect for Bob Agle as a cattleman and he vouches for Dirty Hairy on heifers, has had a couple dozen out of both heifers and cows the last couple of years. I'm going to use some. The popular new bull Detour is also out of DH's dam, or a full sib to her, I forget which, so I am told

I used dirty hairy as a cleanup bull for a couple of years.  sired the most consistent set of calves of any of the ai bulls I used.  Not a throw away in the bunch.  Still use him on my hiefers.  Had about 10 so far this year, only pulled one.  He was as sound and functional a bull as you would want and he covered a lot of ground at my place.  I have a couple of daughters just going into production and they seem to be excellent mothers.

On that Ramblin Fever bull, wow, I was drooling over some of those heifers. I loved the tag 108t. Does anyone know, are these heifers for sale?

showsteernc:Just got off the phone with Dan and yes the 108 heifer is available for sale. You will have to contact Dan as I will NOT price his cattle for him on this forum. He has several for sale. He is clipping for OYE which starts next week. In fact he was clipping on the heifer you spoke of....JOHN

Red,

In my limited experience I would say that he is okay for most heifers. We had a 750lb  Hairy Bear calve at 21 months with only the slightest assistance. Calf weighed in at 73lbs. Gestation early but that has been the case with everything this year. We are planning on using him on Heatwave heifers if that tells you anything. The calf is a nice calf and is growing by the day.

Hope this helps.
