Salmon and Coffee - for Ultimate Brain Power

Listen up! Your morning cup of coffee and dinner delight can help sharpen your memory.

There are good fats and bad fats, and omega-3 fatty acids fall solidly on the side of good. Omega-3s are found primarily in fatty fish (especially salmon), certain nuts and seeds, and fortified foods. A study conducted by researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago followed more than 3000 men and women for six years to see how diet affected memory. People who ate fish at least once a week had a 10 percent slower decline compared with those who did not eat fish, a difference that gave them the memory and thinking ability of a person three years younger.

Some of the BEST foods for Omega-3 Fats: Salmon (wild, fresh or canned), herring, mackerel (not King), sardines, anchovies, rainbow trout, Pacific oysters, omega-3 fortified eggs, flaxseeds, walnuts, butternuts (white walnuts), seaweed, walnut oil, canola oil, and soybeans.

How about coffee? Any coffee lover can tell you they think more clearly after a good, strong cup of caffeinated coffee. Now, they have proof. Researchers from the University of Innsbruck in Austria used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the brain activity of people working on a memory task. The volunteers were tested twice, once after receiving the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee, and once without any caffeine. Caffeine improved the memory skills and reactions times of the volunteers. In addition, caffeine increased brain activity in two locations-the memory-rich frontal lobe and the attention-controlling anterior cingulum. Without caffeine, there was no increase in brain activity. So if memory problems are a major concern for you, and if you don't have a medical condition that precludes caffeine, feel free to indulge in a cup or two in the morning to jump-start your brain.

*NOTE: If you have elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, you should limit your caffeine fix to plain brewed coffee or tea. There is some evidence that unfiltered coffee (the kind used to make espresso, cappuccino, and latte) may raise cholesterol levels, especially in people who are already battling high cholesterol. To be safe, skip the fancy brews and stick with a regular cup of joe. Of course, be cautious and moderate with added sugar!

My gosh if I don't have my pot a day plus some decaf inbetween, life just isn't worth living!
I even travel to shows w/ my trusty coffe maker! Better believe, you know where the hot coffee is when I'm around!!
Up North, I also live on popcorn! (pop) Wonder why I can't keep any weight on?

The salmon thing was completely news to me, but I'm not a huge fish eater.

I don't always get breakfast in the morning, and by eleven, I am a wreck.
It's easy to grab a mug of hot coffee on the way out.  :p

I know about the fish thing, but I don't like fish all that much.  I try to have  a tuna sandwich here and there just because I know about Omega 3's.  Also, I always buy the bread and bagels with flax seed on top, and the taste has actually really grown on me.

Because the health benefits of the Omega 3's and 6's are so profound, there has been a lot of interest in finding ways to enrich foods.  This can mean feeding them to our food producing animals to get it into the meat and milk.  Well, with cattle that's a challenge, because the rumen alters fats so they had to find ways to get them to "bypass" the rumen untouched.  But then, when it works, they have another challenge, because the meat can end up tasting like fish!!  Pretty interesting stuff.

I try to fix salmon about twice a month ( I have a great recipe for it if anybody would like it). We also eat tuna fish if I can make it in a casserole. We do take fish oil tablets every day. I remember my grandmother swore on cod liver oil medicine - the most vile nasty stuff you ever took!!

Might all be why the older generation eschews soda-pop.

Since you brought up the pop thing, there has been alot of hoopla lately in the health world about aspartame poisoning.  Check out this link:

I have a diet coke problem....also get alot of headaches.  I will switch to coffee and see if it helps......or just help me ramble on faster........

i had a doctor once who said he could spot the pepsi generation in older people as they were the one's with osteoporosis, the thinking there that the sody pop displaces calcium in the bones.  don't know if that's true or not. my wife's headaches went away when she avoided prodcts with aspartame.  however, my mom uses, and she is a headache. :-*

Two things about coffee:

1.  Many marathon runners drink it to stimilate them just prior to the race but they do not get a rush or lift if they drink it midway.  It works only once.

2.  30 years or so ago it was released by researchers that 80% of those having heart attacks were hot coffee drinkers.  But my wise dad said, "80% of the people drink coffee."
So I asked my doctor, who was a health nut.  He rode his bike to work and to the hospital.  He said, "One day some researcher will say that there is something wrong with sex and I will quit reading what they write.  Some college student needed a project."  He also told me that I was good for another 100,000 and I asked him if he guaranteed that.  He said, "I do not guaranteed you to walk out the door."

I drank my first coffee at my first February livestock show as a kid and have ever since... it also warms the hands....
