What's a good way for people to get into the cattle/show cattle business?..Especially people that don't have the family or background to support them? I'm really glad I've had a family involvement that has kept me focused on cattle. Do people on steer planet think we need new people to the industry?

Well I think the invitation for new people is always there. Lots of very fine people in the industry willing to lend a helping hand, especially to young people. But, as with all livestock and agricultural start ups, it takes a little bit of money to get in, and quite a bit to be great.

Getting involved in 4-H, FFA, judging teams are a good way to get your feet wet before you even own cattle.

Sure we need new PPL. It takes some patience and a whole lot of work. A shot of luck is nice if you can come by it.

Hard work, time, and a little startup money is all you really need. I have been raising cattle since I was a kid and just started raising club calves the last 5 years. Started off with 11 cows 7 years ago and have 36 this year to calve. Should have 45 for next year and every one of them is home raised since the original 11. Learned how to AI and slowly raising my own cows. I would say if going alone slow is the way to go. Try and raise a few to sell, buying and reselling is a very risky way to do it if you don't have a name your selling. You can usually take less for a calf you raise. Really anything over market price is a bonus. AIing cattle is a fairly cheap way to get started. Just make good decisions off the bat what you want to do and what cows you want to raise. If you want quick turnaround and no heifers to keep breed heatwave and sons. If you want to grow your herd AI to good maternal bulls then when you get your herd the way you want you can breed to about anything.
