We showed at a show this weekend and was very upset about how we were treated. We showed a simmy heifer & the judges comment was "she had to much hair for her breed." We also showed a Chi steer. In our steer`s class, the judge`s comment was " This steer is too stiff on both ends of his feet ( he was very stiff on show day), then without even touching my steer, he said he needed more fat on him, & I was feeding him a too good show feed & I should put him on more generic feed(without even asking what feed he was on). After the show I went up and talked to the judge. I asked him what he recommends to make my steer fill out. He said I should take my steer off of his feed and put him on straight beet pulp to make him fill out. He then asked me what my steer weighed when I had already told him twice ( in the steer`s class & in showmanship) & he doubted me on that by saying " That steer you just had in here weighed 1136?. We a very sarcastic look on his face. Then he asked me what my steer had been gaining a day & his response was "I highly doubt that he is gaining 5 pounds a day." && to top it off all right before I walked away his comment was "Don`t be mad at my decisions today, maybe you should just go home and work harder."

Don't take it personal.  It was one person's opinion on that day.  Keep an open mind and try to see what that judge was seeing.  We can all be barn blind to our own cattle.  If the next judge says something similar, then it is time to sit down and take a good look at your situation.

It happens...I took 4 simmi heifers to a TCCA show right after Ft. Worth 4 or 5 years ago and there were only two other simmi's there and they were pretty poor looking. They won grand and reserve and our calves were "too long", "to massive", and had "to much bone". The four calves I took won a division, 2nd, 4th, and reserve division at FW. We went to after the show and the kid that beat us was there eating lunch with the judge.

just because you handle a steer, that doesnt mean you have any clue how much cover he's got

Do mot take it personally--a LOT of judges mouth is way behind his range of vision-- they get started talking and just spell out words to make themselve sound way smarter than they are-- it's only one man opinion so go a few more miles and see what happens.  A lot of good cattle get ruined by taking a so called experts opinion and running with it.    You know what an expert is--- ex is a has been and a spert is a drip under preassure (lol)

I think everyone has been in the same spot at some point. I personally dont like to see a judge line up calves without putting a hand on them. Had one of my steers I sold a couple years ago stand 3rd in his class and the only thing the judge said was he would like to see more carcass to him. That was the last heavy weight cross bred class and guess what was next, the carcass class which that same steer out of that class turned around and walked right back in the ring because he won on Ultrasound data taken earlier in the day. The watched the judge shake his head because he knew he screwed up and there was no hiding it. I've stood in 3rd and 4th many times and walked out of the ring having people tell me I should have been first. So we all feel your pain. Don't give up there will be a different day and a different judge with better results hopefully.

I feel your pain and it doesn't get any better but my advice is this...    #1. Be a good sport and congratulate the winner    #2.   Know that judge's name and don't show to him/her in the future.  You don't have to bad mouth the judge, just know that he/she is not looking for what you have.    And #3  Hang onto your wins but  leave your losses at the gate when you walk out of the ring.  No one wins 100% of the time and for every winner, there is always a looser - remember how that feels but don't let it ruin your day.

The Heifer in my avatar was exhibited at 44 shows, which is minorto how many shows you could attend in Texas.

We will go to a show Memorial Day weekend where we will show our heifers and steers in three rings and three different judges.  The standard is two rings per "show".  Some will have four rings per show.

There are multiple shows every weekend all year in Texas.  Many people, especially heifer exhibitors, show every single weekend all year down here.

If you wanted to start one young and show her up until she has a calf you could probably take one calf to 100 shows if you really wanted to chase them. It really slows down from about now til August and then it starts picking back up. From late September to April you can hit a show every other weekend pretty easy and hitting one every weekend isn't out of the ordinary.
