Hello! My family has been raising Charolais and club calves for over 2 decades now (used to do Saler before that). We've been showing across Canada since I was a little kid. I'm an adult now and so have gotten more involved with the business side of the farm and buying and selling animals. Lately i've been very interested in buying a show heifer for a breed my family has now knowledge or experience with, a Belted Galloway. We like the look of show line belties and the heifer I'm interested in is to die for, what i'm curious about is the future logistics of breeding her, which has us a little iffy on getting her or not.
My question is if anyone here has experience breeding Beltie heifers? Can you cross them to larger breeds? Can you cross them to clubby bulls? How do the calves end up, are they quite small? We think this type of breed would be fun to play around with on our club calf side of things, but we're unsure if it's a situation where you need to breed a beltie bull to a big cow, instead of vice versa? Is there a breed of similar size they cross well with that keeps that good showy look? If anyone has the answers to my questions it would incredibly appreciated
