F-350 6.4L Powerstroke - N/C

So my husband is looking at getting a 2010 F-350 6.4L powerstroke and we were wondering if anyone is using one currently and what they thought of them.  Most importantly, what kind of mileage are you getting while towing?  Currently our 2009 V10 is getting about 10-11 day to day driving and oh about 6 pulling our 18ft steel trailer.  Also, have you heard of or seen any recurring problems?

I've got a F250 w/the 6.4. I get 12.4 in town mileage, 14.4 on the HWY and 12.0 pulling our cattle trailer loaded and going to shows.  I like it, plenty of power, runs smooth.  Only issue I've had was a issue w/the thermostat but that was covered under warranty.  I will most likely buy another one.

10,000 miles cost on gas or diesel

gas        10mpg *  $3.10/gal =  1000 gallons needed * 3.1= $3100
diesel    14 mpg * $3.23/gal =    715 gallons needed * 3.23= 2310

for every 10,000 miles driven, diesel costs 790 less.  diesel costs at least 5000 more, so on fuel alone, you would have to drive about 40,000 miles to recover cost difference.

add in that you could purchase a 7.3 for 12-15k and get about 12 and use that as a comparison to recover cost of a new vehicle.  both will have different repair costs short term.

i think ford is coming out with their own diesel next year?

you are correct, Knabe. It will be interesting to see how that works out. The bad thing on diesels is the new urea injectors they have to install on ALL diesels. They will add $5 to $7k to the cost of a diesel. They say that the exhaust air with the urea injector will actually cleaner than the air going in.

We traded a 2004 6.0L Powerstroke with 86K on it.  We'd replaced the front end and the hubs wouldn't unlock. It got 15mpg highway on a good day and 12 pulling a 20 ft. steel trailer.
I had a 2002 V-10 with 122K and I loved it.  Didn't pull as strong as the powerstroke, but drug my 20' Aluminum full of cows or horses around just fine.  Mileage was about the same.  

Traded them on a 2010 F-250 6.4L with a Manual Transmission. Only one we could find.  LOVE IT!!!  It's doing 19.5-20 on the highway empty.  16 to and from town (15 miles round trip).  About the same pulling this heavy steel trailer (full bull package, which is for sale btw).  Walks away with that trailer like it's not even there.  It only has 5K on it so far, but at this point I'm really liking it.  

I had a 7.3 turbo.  I sold it and the guy has had to drop 8K in it to get it back up to shape....  I'd like to have it back as a ranch truck though!

I just read an article today in the Ontario Farmer paper that says Ford is discontinuing the 6.4L Diesel Power Stroke because fuel economy sucks (their words) and is replacing it with their own (not International ) new 2011 6.7L V8 diesel which was rolled out last November at Agribition in Regina..
Not sure what to think about the 6.4L but I would suggest some research be done before buying a new one.
The new 6.7L  is supposed to get 23 mpg empty and around 10 mpg pulling a heavy load.
735 ft lb of torque and  390 hp.

I absolutely hate our 09 F-250 with an Auto. Hook on to a 24 foot trailer and it'll sit there for a couple seconds spooling up before it finally starts to crawl forward. Gets around 14 on the highway, 11 in town  and 8-10 pulling a trailer. Nice ride great for trips(besides mpg) but pulls terrible. Fords new motor will be a 6.7, not too far off from the 7.3 where they should have stayed.

I sold my 2002 F250 4x4 7.3 in February.  It consistantly ran 16 - 18 mpg in town, highway, or pulling a load.  I'm now driving a 2007 Toyota Tundra 4x4 5.7 gas w/ 6- speed auto.  I'm getting 13 hwy, 10 in town, and I'm afraid to see what I'll get pulling my boat.

blowing the doors off a dodge, or better yet, a Toyota pulling a boat = Priceless.  I vote for the old 7.3 and a 6 speed.

My 2003 Dodge 3500 4x4 diesel cummins is just about to turn 300,000 miles.  I have spent most of that pulling trailers and it has never never never let me down.  Gets about 14-16 mpg loaded and 20 mpg empty.  I will never own any other brand as long as they use the Cummins engine.

2004 Dodge Dually 3500 4x4.........has yet to let me down! You ought to seriously consider the Cummins Diesel.........

Not next year...The new 2011 is out now with the new 6.7L.  Haven't seen one in person yet, but I know they are out there for sale.  If you want to look at one, you can go to ebay and search for 2011 ford super duty.  There are a couple on there.  Also, there are a bunch of pics of one that has already been purchased at this link, http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/general-6-7-discussion/146809-test-drove-6-7-today-3.html

I'd love to have  one now, but I think I will wait a little while to let the model year bugs get worked out of it.

They don't tool up a new motor every few years because they just want to.  They have to because the old ones can't be made to meet the ever changing emissions requirements from the EPA.
Of course they're going to tell us how much better each new one is so they can sell more trucks, whether they believe it or not. 

I wonder if the half ton diesels they were talking up a couple of years ago are ever going to materialize?  They're going to have to find a way to get much better mileage out of the new diesels if the initial cost of diesel vs. gas engines and the cost of diesel fuel vs. gasoline continue to spread further apart.

I drive a 2010 F250 diesel automatic. Empty around town, 12 at best, highway 16. Loaded 11 no matter what I put on it, but only has 8,000 miles. I have had alot of problems out of the fuel gauge not reading correctly though. Love the truck though. Just got back late last night from a trip pulling about 400 miles with a 26 foot trailer loaded pretty heavy and it didn't have a bit of trouble. Just make sure your fuel gauge works, or that you have an auxiliary, it stinks being on the side of the road when according to the fuel gauge you have almost a quarter tank.

Thanks for all the replies.  He went ahead and got the 6.4L.  He has been waiting for the 2011 6.7 to come out and actually drove the first one that came to town, as soon as it came off the truck.  He really like it, but was worried about all the first year equipment on it - not to mention the price tag.  We started out with a 7.3 and loved it until the trany started giving us fits while we were hauling.  I told him I did not ever want to experience a break down with a load of cows on - not my idea of a good time ANYTIME!  So when we went looking he was worried about the 6.0 and 6.4 but has been talking to people and found that they made a lot of adjustments to the 2010 model.  I'm sure it's still not perfect but at least he has is his diesel again and it sounds more like a pickup truck should  (thumbsup).

Not to pick on you but I have had several dodge trucks and friends with that truck and they don't get 14 mpg driving empty unless you did something to it. The 2009 Chevy i got gets 17 to 18 mpg driving around. Sorry not trying to start anything.
