41 days till the final show and still need a ton of cover. We switched it up today to this, feeding all he will eat. Weighs 1150 or so.
380 corn
200 4 T Fyer
75 molasses
50 Steam Rolled Barley

think we can get there?

Edit : just weight taped him at 1169 for the poorly finished line.

Well, I think it all depends on how much of that ration he will eat per day. He should be able to make it to 1250+    easy enough--fat enough might be another story since he "still needs a ton of cover" at 1150 lbs. Is the molasses liquid?  You're at over 10% molasses, which might be plenty high. I guess you'll just have to see how consumption is and go from there.  What is the % fat in the ration?  I can't remember the fat% in Grand 4-T Fyer.....

Nasc : I'll just say this, Sunglo Epic works. I'm not worried about the 100 lbs, just the finish. You remember how stout my SS calf was at the State and then Ross... He's still got it  O0 I need to get some new pics of him.

if you can keep him confined in a small area say a 20 X 20 pen where he can get minimum excersise while still being able to move will help with adding fat. Also as stated additional fat supplements might help down here in texas where its hot a well you know  (lol) we have had good results with a product called final cover its high but works and its a cold fat might be worth a try. Goodluck!

I have seen finishing diets up to 35% tater scraps.  I would start with 2 pounds of smashed/diced raw potatoes per day to get him use to them and increase to 2 pounds per feeding.  He will probably get the squirts in the beginning, but should stiffen up as he acclimates to the diet.

We used Shag last year and I was sold on it.  Now this year, it doesn't seem to be doing squat.  We have 3 steers.  1 has TONS of hair, even after being turned out to pasture for 2mths.  The 2nd one has a fair amount of good hair, but the 3rd has nothing!  Rinsed multiple times daily under fans all day.  If we and got some of the Epic, so you think it would do any good in before our show the first part of August?
The first 2 steers are black, and the one without hair is tan.  Didn't know if that made a difference or not.

They say it takes 60 days but we started seeing some results at around 20 - 30 days.   So, you could get some results by then.    So much depends on genetics and hair care.     We have 3 heifers on it now - a fall calf, a Jan 09, and a March 09.   The fall calf still has a lot of baby hair and is not loosing it whereas our the other fall babies are.   The two spring hfrs are both growing hair but the Jan hfr is way ahead of the other one on hair growth.    All are treated the same - we do not have a cooler room, just a diligent rinser & brusher & then they stay under fans all day.

ETA: Forgot to say that Epic is cheaper than Shag.  It's also now in a pelleted form that they actually eat.

How many days out did you start noticing it to work?

We are setting at t-minus 38 days till move in. I doubt if that is enough time to give the product a fair chance.

I would like to see some photo’s of your SS as a fat.

Some cattle just don't have the genetics to grow hair. We have had a couple of Herfs in the last 2 years that would not grow hair---and they were very closely related. They were rinsed, brushed, blowed, under fans, in the dark, fed Shag, etc.  The other heifers treated the same grew hair...My point is, I wouldn't abandon a "hair growing strategy" because one didn't respond. I know it's frustrating, but some of them are just gonna be "hair challenged!"

I have been feeding it 20 days now and I have noticed a difference in his hair. Hair starts on the hind quarters but while he has been on this stuff, it has come in all over at the same. Here is a poor cell pic of him outside, not setup or anything special. you can't tell how much hair he has ( its probably 3 inches all over except the shoulders and neck, 5 inches around the stifle) Still have 38 days in the cool room and epic left. Been rinsing twice a day @ 6:45 am and 9 or 10 pm at 55-60 degrees and 1 turbo fan.

BTW what kind of steers does Regan Bowman like? hopefully the ones with the tremendous ass and bone, sheer muscle type..

Thank Z, Good deal.

We are running pretty close to the same program as you.
We live down in a Hollar with plenty of tree canopy
so we don’t see the sun after 7:30 in the evening
so on the cooler days we can kick them out about an hour
before you do but other then that we are doing the same program.

Karee’s Black steer decided to shuck out his hair about a month into the “air-room” regiment.
And we are talking Tele Savalas
images

around his tail head.
He also shucked out a lot at the heart girth.
The two places it is the nicest to have……..

Nice job with your SS.
He is looking like he is gonna be right at 12 o’clock for you.
You probably should go ahead and clear a spot off of the mantle
for the new hardware and maybe repaint the walls
with a color that goes good with purple banners.
