What is your favorite moment(s) that is/are cattle related?
Mine is watching the sunrise at the barn with the cows grazing peacefully.


And I know everyone likes winning, but dig a lil deeper .

I love looking at a clean barn after cleaning for hours after my steers, feels good looking at how good the barn looks and looking at clean cattle hair fluffed and all, gives me a sense of accomplishment,

Watching my children working together at night grooming the heifers WITHOUT arguing.  That is just blissful.

I love it when my daughter now 6 wakes me up in the morning when the first new calf of the season hits the ground cuz she is so excited that she can barely stand it.  She likes to be the first to put a halter on the calves and start playing with them.  It is realy fun to watch. 
Had a realy good moment this past week at our county fair.  After a long day of complaining and crying from the usual crowd of ignorant 4-Her moms and dads. I had the pleasure of watching the moment when a VERY hard working young man had his calf selected as Champion steer at the show.  I never gave it much thought as to why people get that excited about a 4-H fair, but that young man had worked so hard and put all the time in.  To see his face and expressions shortly after the judge shook his hand and congradulated him, was truely a great moment.  It made all of the rest of the bickering and complaining just fade into the back of my mind for a little while.  That was the first time he had won, cool to see him that night for sure.

I agree Jake, I was bummed that my calves got beat, but i will never say he didnt work for it or he didnt deserve it.  You couldnt buy that moment from him for anything.

I personally love the late nights in the barn in the spring when the calves are first born.  Watchin a day old calf run around is a big feather in my hat.  But then again I love seein the crowd gather at our sale in the fall also, it kinda depends on the season cause there are a lot of things I enjoy about this biz that I wouldnt trade for a time clock any day!!!!!! <beer>

My favorite moment was in Kirksville, MO...My daughters first official "big girl" show with her heifer.  Terrified, scared, and trembling but she went in the ring.  I had tears running down my cheek...not sure if I was more scared for her or more proud.  After her nerves relaxed a big smile came over her face.  That very moment in time I know she was "hooked" on showing and raising cattle.  Being passionate about my kids and my cattle I think I was the proudest person in that barn that day.  She has went on to win champions and reserves all over Missouri and yes they were great, but that day in Kirksville when everything "clicked" in head and heart is my favorite cattle day in the world.

When ever there is a new calf, and every morning when I open the gate and my heifers walk theirselves to their stalls. I've never had a pair that was broke this well

Well there are lots of great moments, I can always get back to my "center" by watching my cattle graze and just listening to the sprinklers.  No matter how stressful the day has been, there is just something about that combination that is so peacful. 

And there is amost nothing better than listening to a mama talk to her new baby.

With out a doubt, my favorite moment was the compilation of the National Junior Maine-Anjou  shows we attended from 1991 - 2000.  The trips; getting lost with a 5-trailer caravan in Downtown St Louis, finding a Ford Dealership open on a Saturday afternoon which replaced rear differential gears in less than two hours, the CB radios, a new radiator in Des Moines, and on and on.  The events; telling a very well known and respected breeder to leave the juniors mixer/dance because he was VERY intoxicated; those crazy Junior Board meetings (Jr Advisor perspective: nobody ever knew what they were supposed to do), the Basketball games, sack races, and on and on.  The contests: Quiz Bowl; everyone wanted to be on Kara Lamports team, my 10 year old daughter giving a presentation on AI.  Her pointer was the AI tool, Team Gooming - always had to drag a generator half way across town, Adult Showmanship (Red said it best).  The the great comradery among the kids, parents, staff and Judges, the great friendships made which are still in place today.  The Show: almost anti-climactic at the end of the week, but still a bunch of fun; the first time to see our daughters win a class, a division, a Bred & Owned Championship, and exhibiting a heifer we bred to Res. National Champion in South Dakota.

If you want to compile literally thousands of Favorite Moments, don't ever miss your breed's National Junior Show!!!!

My favorite moment is when  you bring the heifers home after the long week at the fair and let them out in the pasture!! They get frisky!!  <party>

Also its a good feeling when all of your hard work pays off  ;D

Brisk fall football saturday mornings....cows anxious to get from pastures to stalks....crunchy leaves falling and still plenty of dark green grass!

Followed closely by early grazing season, lush grass, cows grazing with calves running around....the most important thing...NO FLIES YET!

All Great moments!  I could not have picked a better thread to read.... just as we head to the state fair.  Agree with AAOK, there are many memories to be made at Junior Nationals and we feel fortunate to experience our first last month.  Have to agree with Husker1 about fall football and those crisp saturday mornings when you are watching some pee wees stretch on a fresh cut field.... Had a chat with my boy this morning about football. (his first year in pads)  He is a little scared, but ..... I have a feeling ...... he will like it!  A lot! 

You know, I like watching the current years crop of deer grazing in the field, with the cows, just as the first rays of sun cut through an early morning fog!

Watching a sunset over the barn took a backseat to seeing my little brother when Sr. Showmanship in Indy this summer. I think a moment that is my favorite is one where I feel proud and I couldn't have been more proud than at the Hereford Junior National.  <party>
