Do feed supplements (ex. Shag) for increased hair growth work?  If so which seem to be the best???      Thanks

I think several seem to like Shag. Chambero has been feeding one it & seems to be having good results.

(welcome) smoothlikejello! Very interesting profile name! A story behind it?

We put melatonin in our feed, and it works really well. Of course, you still have to do the work, and have the genetics, but it helps with hair, and attitude!

I've also been looking into getting Tasco as well.  I don't know if it's OK for heifers or what, but I would like to learn more about it.  I should have paid attention when someone was talking about it before.......ahhhhh crazy day.

First of all, I'm inherently suspicious about supplements.  However, I've seen the melatonin implants work.

There are a lot of people in Texas that are using Shag.  Since our calves just haven't had the hair the past couple of years as the competition (I know its not a genetic thing), I decided to give it a try this year.  I am using it on one steer out of four in the barn.  I'm pleasantly surprised so far.  I don't know if its just the calf, or maybe we work a little bit harder on him (not much more at all), but the calf I'm feeding it to shed right out and already has enough new hair back that I can do what I want with it.  He is way ahead of our others, even though they were all very hairy babies.

It's expensive but if you don't mind spending money, I wouldn't mess around with any of the other ones.

Where do you get melatonin?  How much do you feed?  Wondering if that is cheaper than Shag?

It does come in a liquid form, In the SC you see adds every month for Grow and Shine.  That's liquid melatonin.  I found a
supplier last year that sold gal of liq melatonin a little cheeper than Grow & Shine.  We had great results last year.  We had circumstances
that have kept us from using it this year.  It seemed to have very good results for us last year.

There's this kind of mineral we used on our show calves last year that lowered their body temperature. We started feeding it to make them stop standing in the water but it did make their hair grow longer too. It's called Master Gain, I believe. It has a withdrawl time though so if you want to give it to market show steers, you might want to note that.

I dug into this issue pretty deep earlier in the year.  Grow and Shine is cheaper than the pills from WalMart, but none of them are just a whole cheaper.  Shag does contain melatonin, but reportedly in a modified form than raw melatonin which supposedly gets it through the digestive system and into their system before it gets broken down.  Who knows.  The biggest difference for me is its a whole lot easier to add the Shag pellets to the feed than to dose them with liquid melatonin with a syringe every day.

We have used Show Bloom for the last 5 years and I stand by it's effect 100%  Now, understand that is not to say that it will add a ton of hair.  Rather, it makes the dilligent work you do on the hair and skin coat pay off at a much more consistant rate.

Just remember - you get what you pay for.  and that doesn't only go for the money!  You gotta WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is an article on the front page entitled summer hair care tips. http://www.steerplanet.com/content/view/29/52/

I've been wanting to use Kalmbach's Hair Magic product. It's a pelleted top dress. Anyone ever use it?
