Fitting Question?

This may sound ignorant, but I am showing a steer for the first time in I don't know how long. I typically show gelbvieh heifers, but  have heard alot about the use of Ultra-White to fit steers. I have a idea of what it does, but can anyone explain how to use it properly to build legs? The steer has plenty of good hair.

It's white paint. There's hundred of uses for it. You need to be more specific.

Don't want to seem mean, but even when you say building legs, there are lots of ways of using paint to do it. I'll try to explain a little-

The most basic way is to fit the leg like normal, clip it out, and then put a light, even coat on the leg and then clip off the wild hairs.  Then you can go back and put another coat on and see where you're at.  You can do multiple coats, but if you're inexperienced with this sort of fitting, I'd just start with one or two light EVEN coats. The worst thing you can do is get crazy when you first put the paint on. Remember that you can always use more, and a lot of times you will only need a few coats.  Try to watch some folks in your area that are more experienced, and even ask them to show you. I know that I never turn down a chance to help out people, especially if they listen and try to do it the right way

I think it makes for a more natural black look that matches the animal.  I personally think that painting over white with black makes the leg look more grey than black.

It kinda does. Then when you try to make it all balck(when  you use only white to build) most people make it too black and it looks unnatural.

@ stangs: do you get The Showbox? Look at the results section and sometimes you'll see black calves with grayish white legs. It's probably bc they didn't use brown.

The reason it shows through so much in the magazines is the flash on the camera. I agree that when you fit at a big show and you are getting a picture taken, you gotta layer some brown/auburn between the white and black, but for smaller shows like county fairs and local jackpots, there is little reason to use more paint than the basics.

Exactly.  I don't remember the last time I fit one of ours at something smaller than our state fair.
