Flush Opinions

I know it seems like this thread comes up several times on SP but I would like some opinions. I am considering flushing this cow, she is a Stoutline X Yankee and 2 years ago raised a very nice PB Hereford calf, her calf last year was a Deadliest Catch and again a nice calf but I am disappointed in the size of the calf and I sure didn't figure that size would be an issue. She is AI'd to One & Only this year. I am considering flushing her to either One & Only or MAB, but also wondered about Smilin Bob.

I also have considered Exile for a shorthorn cross or a Whiskey son for a Maine cross, maybe The Irishman.

This may be a stupid question, but you have a pretty nice looked PB cow there.  And you said that you raised a nice PB Hereford calf.  Why wouldn't you flush her to a proven PB Hereford?  I'm not familiar with the breed but like bulls like CRR About Time 743, UPS TCC Nitro 1ET or STAR TCF Shock & Awe 158W ET...Understand that that's not the clubby thing but many that's not your cow's thing?

Flushing her to a Hereford is one of my thoughts but I just didn't mention it here as I have a pretty good idea what I would breed her to if I went that route. I understand where he is coming from; a cow that doesn't have what it takes to produce marketable purebred seedstock doesn't necessarily discount her ability to produce crossbred terminal offspring. She could potentially have a below average set of EPD's, or even possess a more clubby look that might not be accepted in the purebred circles. (Not saying that is the case with this cow, just an example).

Just seems to be an expensive way of getting commercial slaughter animals, would surely be cheaper just to put her with a bull?

So that you know what my issue is with her; she has a poor udder very small in the front and adequate rear. While she produces fine offspring I do not wish to pass that trait on to my customers. She can however produce terminal cattle and I won't expect someone to come back complaining about I sold them a poor milking animal. Now that that is cleared up can we get back to the original question? This is exactly why I usually don't ask for opinions from SP, but thought that maybe with a larger knowledge base I might get some good ideas.

I really like the idea of Lautners Red Rock bull on her, or maybe Johnny Football or Red Dirt.

What about Carpe Diem? We used him on a few Herefords a couple of years ago and got along pretty well.

I had a wreck with Carpet Deim the year he came out and while that was with heifers I still have a bad taste from it. But he is something to consider. I will see what the reports on Johnny Football are this spring, as well with a couple other rookie bulls. What I am really concerned about is that Deadliest Catch down sized her so much last year it really surprised me. I was originally thinking Walks Alone or BIM but I think that could down size too and I'm not sure that is what I want.

Mark will Exile add power or just just maintain power? This cow has good power for a Herf but I would like to add some, Yellow Jacket could be he ticket and I will look at Sahara. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you are in the South then I agree Red Rock is the bull.  Otherwise, yellow jacket would be my choice.

She has a lot of nice parts to her if I were to try something on her it would be along the Bodacious or his sire bojo lines we have used them to fancy a few up.

I think BOJO is a good candidate, I have heard issues with Bodacious and soundness. I wasn't real happy about the tiger woods calves I have had but they never suffered from lack of frame or soundness. But I am really liking the Exile or Yellow Jacket option at this point.

I many not be very popular after this.  And I apologize in advance.  Why are you feeding her and thinking of flushing her based on your description of her?  Is there an emotional attachment?  What's the parable about sowing seeds?

Well that a fair question, her first calf was a PB Hereford bull calf and I steered the calf after seeing how her udder developed, I sold the steer to a young man that took him and showed at several jackpots and his county fair, the calf never stood lower than second running against all comers and stood Reserve at his county fair beating some very nice clubby bred calves. She put all of the pieces together on that one, I figured that Deadliest Catch would niche well with her but he didn't, no crime in that. I am very excited about her calf this year from One & Only and maybe she is best left to breed her a couple more times and see what happens.

Now I have to ask you what have I said that would make you cut her head off? Is there something you see in a crappy picture that you really dislike? I mean just because I don't want to pass on poor maternal genetics to my bull customers, and don't want them to be bitching about the bull they purchased from me. She did at least once produced a damn nice calf, and if she can produce a good return on what I have into her why would I sell her? Is she donor material, maybe not.
