You may want to reconsider buying the Yellow Tail brand next time you are buying wine. They donated $100,000 to HSUS.

Interesting that a company that suggests pairings of meat with their wines donates to an organization that wants everyone to be vegan. If you have a facebook account, you can go on their fan page and join many others (including me) who have posted on their wall about how upset we are that they would donate to HSUS.

It is really sad when you see how the HSUS influence just continues to spread. I have to believe that it is at least partially because the average person who is not directly involved with the ag/livestock community is mislead by the name. Also now they have so many things set up that people don't even know about. I forget which bank it was, but one of the big national chains has some kind of deal where each time some one uses a debit card for certain type purchases it sends a penny or a dime or something to HSUS. Just through sneeky things like that I bet even people who would never consider doing so are helping spread the HSUS influence. It is scary that a radical activist group can gain mainstream appeal and acceptance, and amass a major fortune, mainly through underhanded tactics and by projecting a false front.

I had to giggle at the wine and meat pairings section, too! I suggested to a friend of mine to mail their unopened bottle back and tell them why they don't even want them in their homes. I doubt they would actually send people their money back, but a letter asking that from a lot of people might make some sort of impact.

This morning, it was very, very hard to drive past SONIC and not get a pop and breakfast, but I did it! I have given them up since news broke about HSUS holding a spot on their board of directors. I don't think my small money will hurt their bottom line, but it is a principle thing!

We have a hard, uphill battle on our hands. If you haven't, you should register and complete the NCBA sponsored Masters of Beef Advocacy program. Upon "graduation", a Web site opens up to you and they provide many valuable resources on how to help keep our footing and band together.

I had no idea about the Sonic/HSUS connection.....how tragic.  W don't eat out often, but Sonic is one of our favorite places locally to eat out.  In fact, our county 4-H Council is starting a fundraiser Saturday selling Sonic discount cards.  I hope we can return the cards and politley explain to them how detrimental HSUS is to animal agriculture.  I'm sure our local Sonic has no idea.
Does anyone have a list of major corporations with HSUS connections?  We should post them - at least we can all speak with our money that way - a small step in an overwhelming battle.

I'm impressed with how many responses they've had!    Good for US!!    I wonder if we could do the same with Sonic & some of the other places that are affiliated.

Chipotle, Jack n the Box, Steak n Shake, Domino's to name a few are in bed with HSUS. In most cases, they become shareholders to get spots on their boards. They called for a shareholder resolutions for Kroger and McDonald's. Don't know if they are partially in control of these organizations or not.

They have also created their own line of pet food that will be sold in Petco's and Whole Foods (only in a few stores now, but hope to get them in more by spring.) Read this link..... http://www.petproductnews.com/headlines/2010/02/03/hsus-enters-pet-food-market-with-humane-choice.aspx

They are back to fighting in Ohio. They are putting an initiative on the November ballot there. http://www.cattlenetwork.com/HSUS-Seeks-Initiative-To-Regulate-Ohio-Producers/2010-02-03/Article_Latest_News.aspx?oid=982393&fid=CN-LATEST_NEWS_&aid=760

They are a PR MACHINE!

the part that upsets me the most is how CMT running 60 - 90 sec ads for the welfare and care of abuse and neglected animals, and you can pledge $20/month.

I was NCBA last summer and one of the hottest topics was how to combat the powerful budgets of HSUS and PETA, consider that HSUS's budget is 4X that of National Cattlemens!

by not buying products from companies that endorse HSUS then we can have a fighting chance.

Now I agree with a lot of the comments about how the humane society is somewhat in left field with some of their programs but not as far as say PETA is- but folks they do a lot of good too - most of the people on this board take better care of their animals than a lot of children that we see, so their feathers are ruffled a bit and I understand and I am too about some of the things they bring up - but we must admit  it is nice to see some agency step in to help take care of the abused and neglected horses for instance that are all over the country as well as other abused companion animals that need someone to care for them - and we must admit that our dairy farmer brothers often do make a complete mess of caring for livestock on concrete and most of the stories/videos are of dairy animals either veal or downer cows - I for one will not eat veal - I just went to the humane website and watched a video on there that I know is probably pretty common in the veal industry - we must admit that veal are not very well cared for, particularly the ones fed the iron-deficient diet to get the really pale meat that brings top dollar - I agree that confinement for stupid little dairy calves in huts or chained is cruel - none of us like the emotional appeal that they use to bring in the big bucks that is addressed to urban dwellers that enjoy steak or burgers or hot days or eggs but don't grasp the reality of the processing in the food chain for any meat animal - but that is just the way that it is and I really doubt that Yellow Tail bottled in Australia gives a crap how many cattlemen drink their wine -

I have a hard time believing that an organization bent on turning us into a vegan society and outlawing the owning of livestock or pets has the best interest of the animal agriculture industry in mind.  Also, you reference the abused and neglected horses in the countryside, but if HSUS and PETA had not worked so hard on the banning of horse slaughter, maybe we would have a place to go with these horses.

Sammy - do your homework - find out what percentage of HSUS budget goes to lawyers and lobbiests VS the percentage that goes to taking care of animals. Google Wayne Pacelle - find out what they really want, not just what the PR says to raise millions of dollars

The goal of HSUS is not only the elimination of animal agriculture but also the elimination of domestic animals (“one generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are the creations of human selective breeding” Wayne Pacelle, President of HSUS, statement made at the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation Conference, Wash DC, 3/10/1993).

I'm proud of animal agriculture supporters for coming out in droves to voice their concerns and distaste on Yellow Tail's facebook fan page but it was to no avail.

http://www.discoveryellowtail.com/#/news/year-of-the-tails/

They released this today. A very sad day when an agriculture based company turns on it's own industry. I hope that they will feel the scorn in their pocketbook next quarter. I finished the last bottle of Yellow Tail in my house tonight and it will never enter again.

Sammy-
Don't forget that some of the videos HSUS has been behind haven't surfaced for months. If they loved animals and wanted to prevent abuse, why don't they show them right then? I get sick thinking of how the cruelty to animals gets much more press than the events that are proof of our good stewardship.

I am with you on the emotional side of it. I would never and will never allow that kind of treatment to any animal I am around. I respect livestock too much to let that happen. This giant machine, called HSUS, is preying on peoples emotions when they show videos. And emotions are tied to hearts, tied to pocket books which flip open and donate to save a puppy or a horse. Their budget is HUGE all ready:(

Oh horse slaughter!!! What a mess they have made of the lives of many, many horses!!!

Oh I know DL that is the case - but look at the budget of any agency, government or private, or corporation and how much of the budget is for lawyers and lobbying efforts - think of how much of our tax dollars go down the drain - to me what the problem is that so many entities be it Michael Vick or the dairy industry make livestock a sitting duck target for anyone with that kind of stated agenda - there is always some ad agency, lawyer, crazed zealot or high-paid executive willing to pounce on it to make the big bucks - their people are never going to highlight how well cared for show cattle are or how well attended any livestock are for that matter - they will choose to focus on the negatives, such as a little girl's show steer going to slaughter, as that makes a splash in the liberal media and gains attention toward fund raising to support those 7 figure salaries - my point is that we are not going to change these people's minds with logic as they do not want to see our position - these people live in urban areas and have never walked in mud or shoveled manure, except for the  rhetorical manure they spread in the media - to me I think that it is best that we, who that have a vested interest in the livestock industry, recognize that some segments do have a problem as in methods of corporate dairy operations that give these idiots plenty of fuel for their fires toward their stated objectives - any concept like what they have has to have an "enemy" and we must admit that it is easy to find evidence of such abuse -

And you mention money spent to promote a concept through attorneys or lobby efforts toward our elected officials which disgusts me to no end - think about how that is no different that the vast sums that will be spent on Super Bowl Sunday commercials to promote a product that may or may not be good for individuals or society at large - think about how much health care costs are increased by drug companies spending untold millions of advertising prescription drugs - they are selling a concept of how your life or humanity at large will be substantially better for having used their product - it is just business like it is for the humane society - it is more about money than the cause in my mind - the hired guns at the top are just doing what they are paid the big bucks to do - and there are people waiting in line for those jobs -

So to me we need to do what we can in our own ways lessening the ammunition that poor animal husbandry practices create.  We as Americans have a lot more things to be worried about than the humane society.
