Ford Powerstroke question

Recently bought a Ford Dually with a 6.0 Powerstroke in it.  Truck runs/drives real good.

Sometimes the truck seems to load up and lose power.  At this time it smokes badly and I have to hit the pedal to clear the engine.  This occurs after I have been driving at a constant speed and let off the pedal and resume(this morning it was coming off the interstate onto a ramp where I slowed and then accelerated again on the curve of the ramp)

One guy tells me to change fuel filters.  Anther says the Superchip needs adjustment.

What is going on here folks?

I have to agree here, the injectors and heads on the 6.0 are notorious for going out.  I have a '01 with a 7.3 and 250,000 miles with no problems and two '08 F350's with the 6.4.  I avoided the 6.0 like the plague, good luck and find a buyer.

Mine does the same thing replace the EGR Valve, shoud clear things up.

I cannot answer your question but I am curious what everyone is liking for a diesel truck...Dodge?  Chevy?  Ford?

This was what my thoughts were exactly. Curious, what color is the smoke? Notice that Ford no longer is using the 6.0. A lot of troubles with that motor. Have not heard of anyone not having the troubles with them. Have a mechanic friend that says Ford's 6.0L engine built his new shop.

I agree, clean or replace the EGR. We have a 6.0 L and that is the only problem we have had. Regularly change the fuel filter and and add injector cleaner or a fuel additive as well.

Also, pull your dipstick out and make sure there isnt any water in your oil..

I have been shopping and read a lot on Edmunds about the 6.0. It seems it was problematic for FORD. Not a good engine. The 7.3L gets rave reviews the series after the 6.0 good reviews. It makes it tough when shopping for a new/used truck.

My husband is a die-hard Ford man.  Ask him about the 6.0 and he just shakes his head.  He wouldn't own one!  He still has his old '97  7.3 that he can't part with, uses it as a farm truck.  He said he would sell it -----"for the right price"!

our Friend has a dodge brand new pretty much mega cab short box dually i love the inside and the motor just the way it handles i dont like and i personally love Chevy duramax they ride smooth have the power you need when you need it and you can put chips in them to add like 300 horse easily

My excursion does the same thing. How is the cold start?? Run a computer on it when it's cold, and it should come up with the right codes for you as to which injectors are bad. Haven't tried the egr yet, but definitely going to try. We ran injector cleaner in it, and it cleared up ran great for a couple days then back to the same old.

New trucks..... Hands down the chevy for ride. We have a 3500 dually loaded, deisel of course. The only problems are.... The built in trailer brake system sucks, doesn't work. The  back up sensors dont work. The factor brakes seem to have an issue. And the dang exhaust fluid!! You have to add exhaust fluid for it to run cleaner for the environment. Sucks when your on long hauls and it gets low, let me tell you! Also the fuel economy on the new 2011 is bad, notorious though. They put a secondary "hepa" filter on the air filter and it restricts air flow. (take it off and fuel economy improves drastically.)

Sounds exactly like an injector. As far as the 6.0's go, the main problem was the 2005 year model. Take that year out of the equation, and I bet you takes 50% (or more) of the problems out.
I have a 2008 with the 6.4 liter with 60,000 miles on it. Never had a problem until last week. The fuel pump is going out. It's at the Ford garage now. They told me that they are working on it right now, but THEY HAVE TO TAKE THE CAB OFF TO REPLACE IT!!!! Luckily, it's covered under warranty, or I would be crying right now. Been thinking about it for a while now, but this made up my mind for me.....it's going to get traded off by the time I hit 100,000 miles on it, and I may seriously think about going back to a gas engine.

I am not sure a gas engine would be any different, maintenace wise.  The new ones are designed with quick disconnects, so taking the whole cab and front clip off is actually done pretty quick, if you are set up for it.    I still run my old 7.3, I can still fix that one.

I agree completely.  We have always worked on our own stuff, but the newer things got the more I cussed engineers.  I had to get some parts at a diesel shop and saw a couple of newer fords with the entire cab and front end suspended above the box, I couldn't believe it.  The mechanic said it takes him about 45 minutes to pop the front end off, and then everything is right there in fron of you to work on.  I guess standing on his head with a torch wasn't an option.  ;D

I think that they must do it on purpose so that they can charge us their high shop rates. Notice how most repair jobs anymore have that one piece that requires a "special" tool to work on it?

We have a 2004 Ford F250 Diesel.  Yes the 6.0.  Has to be a lemon.  Went through three turbos in 50,000 miles.  We currently have 80,000 on and are thinking about trading as we think the injectors are also going out and we have been told it is a $3000-5000 fix and dont know if it is worth it but my husband is such a Ford man he doesn't know if he can go to a Chevy gas truck and would not come close to a dodge and we need a 3/4 ton for all the hauling we do but he would like to go to a gas truck.

My 6.0 had the same problem.  Its your EGR valve.  Don't worry about replacing it, just unplug it.  Did it to mine and it fixed everything.  Its on top of the motor fight in front of the fuel filter.
