Michaela showed her medium weight shorthorn steer to a 12th place finish. The judge kept 13 in the ring. She finished just out of the sale. We were pleased though. Now we will have to slick shear both of her calves this weekend to see which will go to San Antonio.

Looks like a steer named 'Blackjack' won. 13 year girl from the panhandle of Texas. Her family took her to Del Frisco's Steak house after the win. Alot better than "The Big Texan".

Good for her. Look out for BIGTEX NEXT YEAR!

I just heard the grand steer was raised here in the big town of Braman, OK by a breeder with about 50 cows.  I think it went to Bryan McKay before heading to Texas.  I don't know the breeding on it though.

I would say the show was probably the worst we have seen in easily 10 years.  Most of the better cattle were culled.

a big 10:4 to that gocanes719.  I don't want to downgrade the grand and reserve steers they were good calves and fit the bill that day.  But there were better ones that didn't get a second look.  I was amazed that he didn't handle the cattle until he got down to the final 5 or so steers. I didn't see him look at a butt all week, I guess they don't eat that part of the cow in Colorado. lol.  He would let many good calves out of the ring then when he realized he hadn't pulled enough to make the sale he would start pulling at random really hard and fast.

My boys did not do well, in and out in a hurry.  I did not feel like there was a true pattern to the selection from class to class.  Not sour grapes on our part, I witnessed better calves than ours get the gate.

My son had the 5th place lightweight Angus on Thursday for his first time at Fort Worth.  We were pretty happy.  The calf was a late Oct out of one of our herd bulls and an old 1998 model Angus cow.  We were extremely satisfied with our placing.  The calf was right where he should have been placed.

The steer sale was great Saturday as far as I could tell.  Our calf brought $5.50 per pound.  Tenth place calves (the last ones in) were up around $7-$8 per pound.  Overall, the placing steers brought quite a bit more than last year from what I understand.  I'm not sure anything was down other than the Grand.  They did let it be known they were making a concerted effort to push the money farther down through the sale.  We were pleasantly surprised.  Saturday was a tough day for my son though.

The judge was a big stickler for soundness as far as I could tell.  We had a Class 4 exotic that hit the gate for that reason, otherwise he looked the part.  Honestly, I don't mind a swing in that direction at the expense of a little muscle.  I didn't watch the medium and heavy exotic classes, but the high placing calves and the winners in the breeds were a lot of calves that have done plenty of winning all year.  It's hard to criticize a judge's decisions on those exotic classes.  They are so deep and tough.  I thought his champions looked fine.
