Hi I have a show steer and I noticed a little while ago he had a limp in his front end. So we called the vet out and he said there was nothing worng that he could tell he could've hurt himself and it may take around 8 weeks to heal. So I have still been washing him every day and walking and I've seen some improvements but not to much at 4 weeks. We backed him off feed. Is there anything you guys know that could help or know what could be worng?

Banamine might help depending on what the problem is.  If the vet didn't see an issue then it sounds like either just a sore foot or ankle, probably from stepping in a hole or on a rock.  Those injuries don't have to be obvious to be painful to a calf.

We had the same problem last week.  Our steer (1150 lb) started limping on his front right leg.  The only thing the vet found was foot rot.  After a shot of LA300 and some banamine he seems much better.  I am also squirting Iodine between his toes everyday.  Our little heifer also had it.  The big heifer who is penned away from the other two was fine.  It might be worth checking for foot rot.  Good Luck.

Have yall  checked his hoofs for rot?  Also, did the vet give any meds or offer a follow up if it doesnt clear up?  As mentioned, a shot of pain medicine might help you figure out if the limp is being caused by pain.  I'm sure your vet is good but keep in mind some vets don't see a lot of show animals so a second opinion from a vet that deals with lamness in cattle might be a good idea...G-Luck

What is the best place to give a shot to a steer that is 2 months away from the fair?  Just to keep it from being questioned?

60 days out I would stay away from the LA because it can leave a heck of a knot... Like Zach said, non show side neck and watch your withdraw times...

Sub-Q, non show side, in the neck that is. Its generally a good idea to not stick a needle in a cut of meat. Now if dairy people will just figure that out...
