Ft Worth steer show

Can anyone tell me wth is going on in Cowtown? I'm real confused at what is going on there and what kind of cattle this guy is taking!!!

My husband is down at the show and he says it is insane.  There have been amazing cattle not making sale and cattle that couldn't win our state fair winning classes.  He said he is still trying to figure it all out.

Have showed at ft worth several years. Have never seen such a poor display of judging anywhere. I actually feel sorry for the him because he has no clue. I will give him credit for giving every kid a fair chance and taking his time. This falls completely on their SELECTION COMMITTEE which is one person who went out on their own and tried to find someone with zero political connections. IMPOSSIBLE to do. Ft worth has FAILED the youth who have worked so hard on their projects. There area many judges available who may be political but can certainly sort cattle. We can all agree/disagree on type of cattle but this an utter failure.

Packers14 you have hit the nail on the head. Yes, he seems to be taking his time but it is almost like he is picking the cattle that look less than 12 o'clock. I will agree with the fact that everyone is political in their own way but I have seen judges that might use politics to break a tie or sort a not so great one into the sale but not to win a breed or the whole thing. This is embarrassing and not a true representation of the quality cattle that people are working hard to sale, get ready and show in this great steer show.

We showed there yesterday. It is sickening. This guy has a two year contract to judge. I will not subject my kids to him next year. We may skip Ft. Worth next year and head to Denver. It's that bad. Last night, during the light weight exotics, people were actually booing the judge from the stands. I don't condone that action at all, but it will give you an idea of just how bad it is.

ETA: We put one in the sale, so my message isn't sour grapes.

A friend of mine is there now and says that it is an absolute fiasco and he is embarrassed for the guy! If the committees intent was to try to eliminate the politics I understand although, I agree it is virtually impossible. However, when you place someone in the position to make judgements and decisions that they are obviously not qualified to make it makes a mockery and minimizes whatever they are involved in. Whoever is responsible with the stock show should be embarrassed and feel terrible.

I'm not sure that Ft Worth live streams the show. Have someone sit at the exit gate of the show ring and live Facebook it. Plenty of good cattle in that spot.  ;D

I wasn't there, and the only thing I have to go on is the pictures that I have been able to find online.

Champion steer looked pretty darn good.

Many of the other pictures look a lot like a County Fair.

Anyone curious how hostile it was you can friend me on facebook I used it as somewhat of a blog the last couple days about the Fort Worth steee show including videos of the drive. I will say this and leave it at this- the guy did not use politics he has had his head as close to buried in the sand as anyone could ever anticipate (in terms of modern who's who of show steers). Many many many families that have won Tx majors and majors outside of Tx saw cattle take a lap. He did nothing out of spite. However, the man was over his head and he did get lost and it was sad to see because I felt sorry for him. He wasn't after "market ready Feed yard kind" so anyone that says that obviously didn't see the champion shorthorn that weighed 1077- great steer but you could assume there was more appropriate cattle- best shorthorn ive ever seen stood 6th in the heavy class. I will say the man found the best steer in the show. Bar none. He found the best breed steer in the show to follow him based on what was there. Undebatable even if he's an American. He got lost many times and screwed up the exotics worse than a democratic election plan.... indeed so bad that he was getting boos and "you suck" chants from the stands. It was shameful and disappointing but not surprising

I hope for the sake of Fort Worth and the exhibitors as well as the judge that a scheduling conflict happens out of the blue and he can't judge next year. Because it was tragic from many accounts

Don't ask what kind to bring next year. I watched the show in entirety from front row and I still don't know. Clip their bellys tignt and close your eyes and prey. And don't expect to get a good Fort Worth American cheap this spring

Just looked through the class placings,  there were several kids who have in the past been known to have a pretty good calf.  If anything happened it did nothing but help Ft Worth out.  The ones who want to get mad and stay home,  the show is more than happy with your decision. If some who won maybe should have not been in the money, well that check will cash just as fast.  Had a friend in the office say there were 3600 steers entered,  anything to whittle it down is ok too.  Then from the kids point,  I might get lucky and get a check.  Won't be one iota of change.

"I might get lucky and get a check" sounds like you should enter a raffle or a lottery with that mentality

How does turning the steer show into a random drawing help the show? I'm sure you have logic but it seems to make no sense to me

I get the no whining idea... got that part but I disagree with thinking its good to bury the good ones

Not even that. I disagree that it's beneficial to have someone that has a hard time finding them which was the case this week. And that's unanimous from anyone that watched the show as a whole

Whether he could have had a different line up is debatable. I love Americans and that one was amazing but prob could have found a better exotic to use and take him to the top with the grand

Absolutely no way I could've said it better. He was just in too deep and a lot of great cattle got overlooked. I assume you're talking about the Himes shorthorn? Not sure how the calf placed but he was head and shoulders above the rest and I'd agree that he's the best I've seen. Ever. I'll try to find the results but it's gotta be the same steer. As far as the rest of the show, I watched what I could but hearing the boos and cussing coming from the stands did it for me. It just blows me away how folks think it's acceptable to act the way they did.

If putting tens of thousands of dollars in to some steer,  convinced he is the greatest bovine to ever step on a trailer, bet your livelihood on that being the gospel,  and then hanging all that on someone else opinion is just exactly that, a huge bet with short odds on the roulette wheel of showing cattle.  I've seen more Denver champions stand dead a** last then repeat and  the repeat was due to someone owing someone a payback.

Go over to the offices and tell Matt Brockman and every one else how they screwed it up and you won't need to worry about entries ever again.
