Genex Sexed Semen

I know when sexed semen first came out it was only recommended for heifers.  Is Genex Sexed semen suitable for cows?

The recommendations of it only being used on heifers came from dairy research. Thats where it was first used and applied several years ago. The conception rates of lactating dairy cows isn't great at all.

There's not enough data, in my opinion, to say it can't be used on beef cows. You've got to be good with conventional semen to take advantage of sexed semen. The same rules apply, good management, nutrition, a good technician, etc.

The best results in cows in a timed AI situation that I have seen come from using a 5 day CoSynch program. As far as detecting heats, I'd have no problem using it on cows. Either way, I'd only use it on a herd that has been well culled for reproductive issues.

Thanks for your response!  This year I've been right at 85% for getting cows settled.  I've mixed some of our old methodologies with some of Cowboy's suggestions and have seen an increase in cow activity which makes breeding on a natural heat a lot easier.  There are only a couple of cows that I will be using it on.  Both have bred back real easy. 

I've been looking at using Lookout genchoice semen.  I've loved our heifers but can't stand the bulls!  They just don't seem to have the gas.

How does this sorted semen work for flushing?  I think some Lookout heifer eggs would be cool

I have never personaly used sexed semen but Have a 3 year old cow I bought who was bred with some and is due in a week

Sexed Semen can definitely be used in a flush IF it is the right concentration of a straw. All of the bull studs sell straws at 2.1 million dose which is solely for AI. There are other straws available for Flushing that are packed at a 5 million dose. However, the only way to get a 5 million dose straw on a bull is if it was produced in a custom collection for the bull owner. When we work a lot of flushes, we use 4 straws of the 5 million dose per flush. 2 the first breeding and then 2 the next.

The quality of the 2.1 million dose for AI and the 5 million dose for flushing are the same, the only difference is the concentration. Most of the time if we have a cow that averages 8 fertilized embryos with conventional semen, we see about 6 fertilized embryos with sexed semen on the same cow. Even though you get slightly less total embryos, you still make up for it with them being the sex of calf you need.
