I know when sexed semen first came out it was only recommended for heifers. Is Genex Sexed semen suitable for cows?
hereford said:The recommendations of it only being used on heifers came from dairy research. Thats where it was first used and applied several years ago. The conception rates of lactating dairy cows isn't great at all.
There's not enough data, in my opinion, to say it can't be used on beef cows. You've got to be good with conventional semen to take advantage of sexed semen. The same rules apply, good management, nutrition, a good technician, etc.
The best results in cows in a timed AI situation that I have seen come from using a 5 day CoSynch program. As far as detecting heats, I'd have no problem using it on cows. Either way, I'd only use it on a herd that has been well culled for reproductive issues.
