Hair loss

Hey Guys and Gals

We have a calf that rub all the hair off his shoulder on both side against the fence OVERNIGHT.  He has some Hair loss on his lowers 3/4. and a spot on both side of his tail head.

I did see the tail head but never thought to much about it UNTIL

The Shoulder got rub off overnight.

The patch is about 12" x 12" lol he has a mohawk strip between the shoulder blades lol

When i got him in in the morning I looks closely and there is NO spots like lesions on the skin...it just looks like raw skin

So I would assume he does not have Ringworm.  I dont think he has lice either ( why? becasue we live in a area where we NEVER have lice on any pets or animals)

So Anyone have any comments on this I would love to hear from you

Is his pen wet at all?

It could be a skin type issue from constant wetness.

I had the same problem last year sorry to tell you but Im pretty sure it is lice. What you need to do is deworm him asap if it's not done already and then dab bagbalm on the bare skin it works good. They can get lice from birds or even if you rubbed up on something that had lice it will spread. So my guess is it is lice. Oh yeah you need to tie him up so he cannot scratch either or you will have a bald calf, not kidding.

Have to agree, I'd say it's lice, we never have them on pets either, but the cattle will get them if you don't keep them poured.

I vote lice too.  It sneaks up on you & you have to keep on top of pouring this time of year.    Last year we had a heifer with really good hair until she came in heat..    No heat detector needed on her, she was bare butted.

I would say this is the first time I have EVER seen lice on cattle in this neck of the woods

I gave both calves

8 ml of ivomec 2 days ago

Is there anything else i can do?

and do i need to give more?

and how long will it take to grow back lol and will it look the same hair

rub some bacon grease on those spots or some old motor oil. it grows back really fast.

This isn't like ringworm where you are medicating a sore or trying to keep it from getting air I wouldn't use anything that will block the pores.  With lice the hair grows back much quicker, once you get them to stop itching it comes back in no time.

we have lice pretty bad here and we always put the bacon grease or motor oil on. it works better than just stopping the itch.

We use motor oil and it works great. Also, if you keep your animal in a barn, spray your barn. We had a heifer beforethat had a favorite fence post to rub on too so we tied an oily rag to it so if she tried rubbing she'd at least be rubbing oil on herself.

We have 3 calves in our barn, all have lice.  This is the first time we've had to deal with it.  I can't seem to get rid them.  I've treated the calves & the barn several times.

It IS lice.  We live in your same area and we ALWAYS have to treat this time of year to prevent lice.

I'll bet 100% its lice  every year i've had lice on a steer and NONE of my other animals have it.
Although lice are only a one species parasite

we like to use ivomec pour on first and then two weeks later we will use it again to break the egg cycle. we also spray them down with prolate lintox too. We like to use an insecticide sprayer that you hook on the end of a waterhose for the lintox application so you can really soak them down with it.

Poured my steer and then did him again about two weeks later. We were losing some hair on the shoulder and butt, but he's growing it back again now.

I would say the best way to prevent this in the future would be to refrain from breeding to baldy bulls.
