Heifer gone nuts

Yes and we dumped her rotten self to the pasture only to sell her the following year because she was such a rotten cow.

But is your heifer coming in heat?  Sometimes they get a little testy at that time.

We had a heifer that we were able to halter break, showed her once and then she went beserk at the second show we took her to and couldn't get her calmed down enough to ever show again.

She is a May 08 Jigsaw Daughter. I had her on my avatar at one time. When we first got her( in Dec.) my 8yr old son is the one who broke her with the rest of the family's help. You could do every thing with her. Well after she was broke I put her out with the rest of the cows. I would bring her and the rest of the calves up on Sunday's and tie them up all day; then in the evening I would walk them out of the pen and take the halters off. I brought her and my Daughters steer and a bull calve in that needed to be weaned and every since then she has been a total fool( this was about 3 weeks ago). In this time period I have washed her,combed her tied her, tied her up for 3 days with no feed and limited water. Too get a halter on her I have to rope her because she won't let you get near her. She holds her head down and keeps her butt to you and want stand still.

I don't know...  I just had a girl bring back a 900 pound heifer for behavior issues, just wouldn't settle down, but didn't regress like your description... I am going to try her as a momma.. you can be sure the bull disposition will be a big question

Weird, we're going through similar issues with our heifer right now.  It's not as bad as what you're describing right now, but I'm trying to head it off.  I'm using the kind & gentle approach right now.  I hope my patience will pay off, but she's been regressing lately.  She led like a dream for a few weeks & now it's 2 steps  and she goes into lock-down mode.  This all started when we brought home a steer and started halter breaking him.  As soon as the halter breaking commenced on the steer, she quit leading.  Hopefully she'll get over it.  She has a great disposition, besides the latest quirks.  The steer is a darn pet.  I've been alternating days, tying them up one morning for a few hours, and the next morning I just go out there and hand-feed them range cubes.  I don't want them to associate me with always getting tied up. :

I have a vary strange heifer, She was shown all over the place from the obe to reg. to local and preview. At one grounds we have two shows, the first time she did it she took off when I when't to tie outs. After that we did 5 other shows no prob. Returned to the same grounds for our reg. show and she bugged out twice the night befor the show. Then was ine the rest of the season of 4 shows. Not to mention she was also my showmanship heifer and we constanty stood in the top three. Cows, you love them but, some times you wounder whats going on in that meaty little head of theirs :

We had a heifer flip out once come to find out it was because of a microwave in the food stand something about they can hear the high pitch that a human cant.

We also had another heifer that we showed all year she was always a little high headed but very controllable the show before the state fair she got loose in theshowring from my sister and just kept doing it over and over after the second time I pulled her from the class I could controll her but my sister could not even handle her at home after that we scratched her for the rest of the year and  kicked her out that fall mad an ok cow for the first couple of years and then jsu twould not raise a calf worth any thing she is gone now

When the girl brought the heifer back did you question  her ability of halter breaking are did you just take her back and did you refund  the full amount or part of it?

I took her back to the guy I got her from. He messed with her he said and she was fine (surprise surprise). Then he told me he would do what ever needed to be done to make the deal right. Then he tells me that he'll buy her back for half of what I paid. Needless to say I will be going Monday to pick her up. 

I'm sorry I guess it's just me; but if someone tells me that their calf is acting a fool and they want to return it ( especially if a 8yr old is messing with it ) I'm going to give them their money back with no questions asked.

If I were the breeder and you wanted to return the calf for disposition reasons, I would either take it for a while and assess or either give refund or credit towards something else.
We had a heifer that broke easily but then went through a "uneasy" period. We figured out 2 things about her. When she was hungry, she was not happy (she was getting too big so we cut back her intake). Also, she did not like me wearing red!!! She acted like she was seeing a ghost if I had that red coat on. After we figured out these two things, she was fine and went on to become an absolute joy to work with.  I hope you get to the bottome of it!

me and my friend raised over 30 head of jigsaws that i broke. all of them were dead heads just about to lazy. but i did have one heifer thats doin the same thing yours is but her mother is kinda crazy mean at times i think she gets it from the mother side.

We had one that was dead broke so we thought, one day at a show she flipped out, she never did it again. Sometimes its really hard to tell. Good Luck.

cjc, we had a deal for me to buy her back after showing anyway so I just bought her back sooner than planned, I think this girl will be back to pick thru my calves this fall, she has been a jot and she gets first pick.. Doc S
