Well you had to know that I was going to put my two cents in :)
Our bull's sire is Sin City. He's a proven calving ease, definitely throws more heifers than bulls. We have an amazing angus-shorthorn blue roan heifer my daughter is showing this year from him. He has loads of style, muscle, soundness and hair. He's not overly huge in frame score but has the deep body you are looking for. He's had a wide variety of colored calves, of course all of them have been beautiful!
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....................................when are you coming out????????????????????? (lol)

You can't possibly sell to someone on the fact that a bull throws more heifers than bulls, that is nothing but timing of breeding, am I missing something here??

'Preciate all the info. Soon, Box6, soon.  :D CAB, about the Sin City lines, thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't really want to be getting too big and hard doing females, as you know. I'll check out Fringe as I wouldn't be considering a SH for my heifers anyhow. Already got a bull in mind for that. Once again, thanks for all the info. Besides the Box6 bull, Jakes Proud Jazz is looking real strong. Sonny-n-Clear and Fringe are next in line. Perfect Timing is also a consideration. Any "beefs" with any of these 4 bulls?

It's my understanding that there are bulls that tend to throw more of one sex than the other. We've had about 25 or so calves from our bull so far and a good majority of them have been heifers.
I wouldn't stake my life on this but I don't think you can assume that all Sin City legacy bulls are hard calving ease and hard keepers. The bulls out of Sin City have got to have some traits from the dam as well. We have had very easy calving ease and below 87 pd birth weights on ours. They are born lively and healthy and are not hard keepers. If anything it's quite the opposite.

Of those 4 I'd have perfect timing on the top of the list. You need to realize that JPJ does not add frame and you have said before that these are not the tallest cows around. I'd also consider Ace of Diamonds as I have seen alot of dang good calves from him, and I haven''t really seen alot of Sonny and Clears.
I'm also going to take Jill's side and say that the time of breeding is going to be the thing that affects heifer to bull ratio. So I don't think that should even be mentioned.
The Sin City's I have seen have the problems that CAB said. I personally am not going to be trying alot of him or his progeny.
Sorry but I think you should experiment with something that is proven before trying some of these unproven bulls, especially since he is just getting into breeding some shorthorns.

Adding frame isn't a major concern for me. To the contrary, I'd like to stick with less than a frame 5 if possible. That's yet another trait that makes JPJ look good. However, I'm sure even he could add some frame to my "midgets".  (lol) Well, I certainly have to agree with going with a more proven bull. I've heard a lotta good about Perfect Timing, mainly coming from OFS. Good to hear someone else had a good experience with him. JPJ is also pretty proven, from what I have seen and heard. I think I might save younger bulls for a little later on. I'd rather pay a little more per straw and know I'm getting a proven bull whom I can expect some quality out of. Thanks to all for your help!!! It's been greatly appreciated and has helped me out tremendously.

o.k. MYT, I'm done trying to promote our bull to you. I've been bashed too much for my frail ego ;) Not really but I do find it very frustrating that folks jump on a bandwagon without taking into consideration that just because a bull comes from a certain bloodline that their calves are going to equally have the same bad traits that might steer them clear of the original bred bull. Sin City's been around for a while now and I refuse to believe that every single one of his calves has only picked up his bad traits and hasn't expanded on any of the great qualities.
I'll keep our little treasure to ourselves and if anyone wishes to have an open mind about a great bull you're welcome to come and see him and his calves or contact me :)

Please don't go off on Cade for us trying to tell him our personal experiences with Sin City or whichever other bulls that we have tried and not exactly worked out for "us". Radioactive has worked for Jill per say, but he's another that didn't click here. I was just saying what we have here and didn't even add to it the too big calves that left on the dead truck. Don't want Cade to go down the wrong road unnecessarily. There are a lot of great bulls available. Keep plugging your bull, obviously you have a good bull, but it is "VERY" hard to promote bulls. If you don't have the stomach for this thread & you think that anyone has actually "bashed" your bull, it's going to be hard for you to promote, but again, you can't be upset @ Cade for wanting opinions, Be upset with me, but Cade has done, not one thing wrong by asking PPL for their opinions. I don't see where anyone has bashed anyones bull. Like CAB said its a hard business to promote a bull. I also don't think it has anything to do with being open minded about the situation, I mean we are discussing it here aren't we. Last but not least, certain bulls do have more females for the simple reason of it depends on when the cow is bred. This is what affects heifer to bull ratios, ask Cowboy as this discussion has taken place before.

Gee whiz, I didn't try to start a brawl here! Box6 has some great cattle, don't get me wrong. But I certainly don't want to just take that bull and run with him without checking out my options first. Consider when I was first trying to figure out where I wanted to go with my operation. I decided that Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorns were the three main breeds I wanted in my program. Take the Herf bull I'm breeding to, for example. You know how may bulls, EPD's, related experiences, and arguments I had to go through to find a bull I thought was gonna work? Plenty, let me assure you. So here, I'm a little more informed. I know what kind of cattle I want to get. I know what kind of cows I'm breeding to. And now I want a PROVEN bull that has shown he produces good calves. So now I'm looking at all the possibilities and trying to whittle it down to two or three that'll work. I didn't start this step on anyone's ego, just to find a SH bull that'll work for me.

well I have to admit I think if you are really wanted to stay with what your angus production goals have been, then you probably need to look to someone like Justintime, Leveldale farms or look at the American Muscle bull pictured on here.  of the bulls mentioned I think JPJ is probably the bull that will most closely meet your goals.  One thing you mentioned was proven and some of the bulls people have mentioned are not proven and there for should not be eligible for consideration.  The shorthorn breed right now is not really know for producing cattle like you are wanting so you will need to study closely and focus on some beef based genetics.

Geez folks, lighten up! No ones picking on anyone. I was teasing Cade, yes believe it or not. We've had several threads as well as pm's going back and forth and teasing one another and giving each other a hard time. If anything I'm certainly not picking on one who is trying to expand his knowledge.
Thanks for the advise for the strong stomach. I'll continue to promote our bull if everyone promises to open up their minds a little :O) JOKING!!!!
Cade, now I really need you to come here and see our stock so you can redeem my reputation  :)
