I'm in deep s@#t. My wife just bought me a new wedding ring and I lost it inside a cow trying to get a breech calf. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to retrieve it? I'm scared my wife is going to steer me if I don't find it.  :'(

Maybe a magnet for hardware would work?

If it's a gold ring I don't think a magnet will pick it up. I would check the afterbirth and see if it came out with it. If not I wonder if you could flush it out.

Should be able to get a metal detector and find were it is( word of advice use detector on outside of cow) at least you will know if its in the cow or afterbirth.

That's another reason to glove up......  When the vet comes he always tells me on gloves are for pussys......  I always tell last time I checked that is the part of the cow we are fishing around in!

I would go for the metal detector, but you might as well come clean with your wife.....  Man I got my ass chewed for not vacuuming the other day when it was five degrees and had to save a calf....  Good luck man!

I'm sorry - couldn't help grinning as I read through this post (being a 'Wife' and all!!!)    ;)

All kidding aside, contact your vet for advice.  It would be unfortunate if for whatever reason the ring could not be retrieved and interfered with further pregnancies!  Would have to question if a foreign object such as that could potentially lead to infertility........then you're out not only a wedding band but a brood cow also.  :(

I thought I was probably the only one who ever did this! 30 years ago, giant fullblood Simmi cow . Luckily she was laying down and didn't jump up right away. Went back in up to my shoulder ,fished around for 5 minutes or so , seemed like an eternity. all the sudden my hand found it laying on the bottom. Just married a little while then, it gets your blood pumping!

HAHAHA, Thought I was the only one to lose a wedding ring pulling a calf.Mine slipped off while I was pulling the calf, decided to clean the pen out after the delivery, needless to say I know exactly where the ring went.I even sifted through a couple tons of s@#t to look for it.

You better get your butt to the jeweler to find a replacement, if not it might be a good idea to pick something up for her.

Lost mine early in my marriage and practice career - but not in the cow.  Was replacing a big ol vaginal prolapse and slung my ring off somewhere in the heavily-bedded barn aisle.  THOUGHT I knew where it went, but couldn't find it.  Got a client with a metal detector to come out and help me find it, and it was nowhere close to where I thought it had gone.  Quit wearing it on farm calls after that.
Think the wife (also a DVM) and I have both long ago quit wearing 'em (haven't looked at her hand lately) - just too many opportunities to hang 'em on something or lose 'em working with cattle/horses or just 'farming' in general.

Hope you found yours; magnet will only work on ferrous metals (iron/steel), so far as I'm aware.
