I didn't think Herefords had a percentage deal. How can the calf in the corner be shown as a Hereford?

As long as the steer shows prominent breed character, he can be exhibited as whatever breed you'd like. I see steers every weekend that swap between two or sometimes even three breeds depending on who the judge is and how stiff the competition may be for that particular show. I know of one steer that shows Angus, Black Cross, Limi, and Maine.

Thanks!- I've never heard of this. Every show my kids sign up for (in Michigan) everything without papers goes crossbred.

I believe in some states like Texas and Oklahoma they used classification to show as a breed steer but many states still require registration papers to show steers in the Hereford division.  The Hereford Junior National steer show requires DNA along with registration papers.  In Iowa registration papers are required.  Also at the Iowa State Fair Hereford Steer futurity sponsored by the Iowa Breeder DNA is required to be eligible to receive any winnings.  Representatives will pull hair the day of the show if DNA is not already on file.  Hope this help.

I know that Ft. Worth and Houston have a sifting process.  They use to have three breed reps. For each breed.  We had a Hereford steer that made the sift in Ft. Worth.  He got 4th in a class of about 60.  We thought we would back out of the auction, slick him and take him to Houston.  There, he was sifted out and was put in a class with exotics. At Houston, he was 14th in his class of 92.  They auctioned the top 15.  Whew!
