We use dairy cows to put our orphaned calves on, and we will run between 2-3 per cow. We use both Jerseys and Holsteins. Although Holsteins produce more milk, I prefer to use Jerseys, they have higher quality milk, they are quieter and more gentle and I find they take the calves a lot better. I remember the one we had, we just stuck 3 calves in a stall in the barn with her and withing 15 minutes she was licking them and letting them suck.
The holsteins are just big and mean
We find the calves are pretty good sized, for best results I'd say put one or two calves on each cow, so say one embryo and a bottle baby.
