Has anyone here used this bull? I know he isn't a "clubby" bull. Just looking for some info on his calves. Birth weight and such. I have some heifers that I am thinking of using Slider on and also a few I thought about using Beacon on. I want low birth weight but don't want a bunch of puds either.

We were going to sample W/C Bullseye on a few this year. He’s a Lock and Load out of the Werning Dream Catcher donor and he has double digit calving ease. Sale photos and video of his progeny have looked good.
Hook's Beacon is an improved version of Shear Force with better numbers and phenotype. If you like Beacon will do alright for you. However don't believe the hype that he has the best EPD numbers for a purebred Simmental around. Select sires has a bull called JC Engineer that has better calving ease and growth numbers ans is worth a look. Both bulls are calving ease spread bulls and are not designed to turn out big boned cattle with lots of thickness. but for your needs either bull should work. The calves I have seen out of both bulls were out of grade BWF heifers and both bulls worked well in adding growth and calved with out drama.

On my radar for heifers is GLS Declaration (http://www.selectsiresbeef.com/index.php/bull-database-view-page?bid=428&breed=Simmental), and I have actually bred a few heifers to him for fall 18 calving, and will use him on some spring heifers when we breed those.
I like his pedigree, and his numbers look good for us. I know he is not proven, but I know my heifers and what they can do and I think he is a good match for some of them, especially the ones with white.
Another one I use on heifers is HPF Optimizer. His calves flat out grow, and I have not touched a calf yet sired by him (at birth). He is not sleep at night calving ease, but if your heifers can handle high 70 to low 80 birth weights he is one to consider. He tends to throw some white, so I would not use him heifers with a lot of white. We have a heifer in production sired by him, out of a heifer herself. She is raising a dandy of a calf (sired by Elevate), has plenty of milk and keeping in great flesh herself. She is bred back herself for her second calf, and we backed her up 30 days.

With the CED numbers on beacon and elevate being 21 and 23 and BW of -3 and -1 What kind of birth weight would you expect that to be? I just haven't been in this game long and am trying to get a good idea of what to expect.

The more I look at and study the Genex bull WC1143Y the more I think that he is one that needs more use and has been over looked. Reg. # 2684560 also listed in Werning's sire directory. May not be true CE bull but +10 and change CE. 85lb BW.

You can't really "expect" any specific birth weight based on EPDs. Basically you can expect the bull with a -3 BW to throw calves with an average BW 2lbs lower than the bull with a -1.Dale L said:

We finished calving our WC 1143Y calves yesterday and we are very impressed. All the calves are growing great and getting stouter everyday! He does throw a lot of white if there is much on the dam and puts some white on ones out of all black dams. Birthweights were moderate, 75 to 85lbs, so I wouldn't call him heifer safe unless there wasn't big bw on the dam' s side. We are definitely going to use him again this spring.

Via Genex, hetero black. He actually tested Homo black but is what is called a Red "Charlie" carrier. This is all new to me. I guess quite a few of the Lock N Loads carry the Red "Charlie" gene. Anyone??
