Houston Steer Show - Anyone Here Do Any Good?

We didn't.  It wasn't a surprise to us.  Our red Kadabra calf just go too tight through his hips and as he got worse he kind of "quit" on us early and just didn't get enough rear end.  He was really nice on the profile, but just not enough in the rear end.  Got a hard look in the light medium Maines, but didn't get pulled.

We did not take our steers, we still have county show coming up and it is a hair show.  We did not want to slick them and not make the sale line and then come home hairless.  Even though they are blowing their hair like crazy anyway.  On a good note my oldest son was in the calf scramble yesterday and got lucky and caught.  There were 28 scramblers and 14 calves, guess who was number 14 to catch!  My hat is off to all the scramble committee members, they do a wonderful job of organizing the event and making the kids feel good about themselves.  We leave this week with heifers and show on Saturday and Sunday.

That is great about the scramble! It truly was a memorable event and the scramble committee has a lot to do with it. I caught a calf in '88 and also caught the last calf . Congratulations on catching a calf. Good luck with your heifers.

FWIW, Kadabra will make them really pretty with lots hair, but you are not the only one who didn't get nearly enough rear end from a Kadabra... my cousin's steer was the exact same way.

Thanks to all for the CONGRATS!  I think his favorite part was meeting the Justin Training Staff and injured riders in the training room after the scramble.  He took a hoof to the breastbone area and they had the Justin team look at him before they would release him for pictures.  Again it was awesome the care and attention HLSR people give to the youth.  This is also noticed when exhibiting livestock, every Junior exhibitor receives a T-shirt, cap and buckle whether they finish first or last after showing.  It is my favorite place to attend a major event.

We placed a steer at a major for the first time after 6 years of trying with our Shorthorn placed 7th.  It was nice to get it done.  Would love to do it again next year.

Exactly!  The scramblers are competing to catch a calf in the arena by hand only.  They must then take a halter and put it on the calf's head and lead it into a designated area to complete the task.  Keep in mind this is done in half of the rodeo arena and the calves are very rank and have not had a halter on them before.  Those who catch in Houston receive a $1500 certificate that they use to purchase a heifer and return and show the next year.  The money is raised through donors to help kids purchase an animal.

I forgot to add these calves are large, my oldest son is 6'1" 175 lbs. and believe me he had his hands full.  I really respect the young girls that accomplish this task, or as my oldest son says "Those girls are gritty".

I dont know if they still do it but this is how they use to do the catch a calf contest at Aksarben, those that caught a calf would get a calf to raise and keep books on and then bring it back the next year to show.
