I am looking for feedback regarding what we "might"expect from Mark Hoge.  I am a big fan of his dad and I am wondering if we should expect the same preferences?  We have three steers to choose from and I was hoping this very experienced and sharing community would provide some guidance.  Thanks in advance to all who care to postulate! <beer>

Any time you are trying to decide which calf to take - it really boils down to take what you consider to be your best.  You can really overthink it sometimes if you aren't careful.  What differences there are between judges usually can make a difference in class winners, rarely in what gets pulled or not. 

That being said, the "book" on the younger Hogue is that he is relatively similar to his dad - he likes them pretty and sound.  A big deal on his dad last year that did make a difference on who got pulled - and he said it upfront in his reasons - in lighter weight classes, he wanted calves that weren't "done" at 1000-1100 pounds versus ones that were finished at that weight.  He would take less finished, younger calves over ones that were just obviously small but fat.

Mark has a very keen eye.  he assisted as coach on my judging team at Iowa State back in the mid 90s.  if you are really going to break him down, remember that he is a pig guy at heart.  He will evaluate market steers with the same criteria that he uses in hogs.  they will need to be blown apart, good looking and sound.  I think you will enjoy hearing him on the mic and I have no doubts that he will do a very thourough job.  I would agree with Chambero on his evaluation of light weight cattle and that fits right in with my explanation of him relating nearly all species back to hogs
