This is when you feel aweful proud of those cows that get rather "phyco" during calving season.  I dont think a coyote will mess with one of them....the dog stays pretty far away!!

Cows aren't stupid - they can tell the differenct between a coyote and a human - I don't buy the you have to have psycho cows to keep you pastures free of coyotes - my cows will chase a coyote or a fox or a strange dog with a vengence but they know my dogs and they know humans - IMO that is just a convient excuse for keeping and propagating poorly tempered beasts

I remember when I was growing up & a hunter shot one of the Jersey cows saying he thought it was a coyote. We had a multiflora rose bush ( nasty horrible things) & he shot through it.
That to be honest is my extent of coyotes. I'm not sure any of my spoiled former show heifers would take after a coyote. They are pretty comfortable around our dogs.

I'm not saying that our cows are phyco all the time, just for a few weeks after they calve.  I have heard stories of charolais cows killing a skunk cause it came into the corral at night.  Also, something outragous (ours wouldnt last long if it came to this extent)....my friend told me of a cow that was calving who wouldnt let anyone near her.  She was only calving, let alone AFTER she had the calf.  Anyways, she was being such a total witch, that one guy had to plow her down and parked the quad on top of her while the other pulled the calf.  That is retarted.  True story though, and pretty sure the cow was PB angus.  We should start a new thread about the most ouragous (and truely rediculous) stories that we have heard!!

I've got a SimiAngus cow that will put you back in the truck in a hurry for the first couple of days after she has had her baby if you try to walk up for an inspection.  She's never missed a calf and nothing has ever bothered one of her babies.  She's back to normal after a few days.

Not only do cows not like coyotes but, I once seen a possum stroll through the barn that was minding his own business and the cows reared up and stomped it!

theres yotes around here but i havent seen one since 2 years ago, but they are here, hear them all night sometimes, never had one bothering the calves, have shot dogs though.

We dont runa big herd that makes money, but a few years ago we had a cow calving and we got her in the barn, pulled and pulled for 3 hours, calf didnt come out, cow dies, we took the cow out and secured her to a tree and hooked HEAVY DUTY CHAINS to the tractor, got em on the dead calfs feet, thing still didnt come out, took cow on the hill in woods and left her there
