How is your county show set up.

Well it's me again. Sorry about all of these posts....I wanted to talk alittle about how everyones county show is setup. And what i mean is, what do you do to make your show fun for everyone. For example do you have music, carnivals, dances .... Do you do anything spiecal for you buyers, like dinner, drinks, "happy hour" before the auction.  What ever i am just looking for ideas...  please share.

Our county show is going on during the fair so there are other things going on all the time we usually have a radio in our stalls at any show for the buyers they do have acomplimentary meal before the starting an hour before the sale

Our county show is during our county fair also and it is a joke! It has to be the worst run fair anywhere. We use to have a buyers dinner for all the buyers but we no longer do that because the fair board is worried that someone may have some free food and then not buy an animal. All the food is donated so the fair does not pay for it. Plus the there is sooooooo much fighting between all the adults that they have taken all the fun out of it. Our county fair starts tomorrow it will be 10 long days!

Our show and auction, like many others is during the county fair, the fair supplies food vouchers for the buyers (they can get food from several different food vendors at the fair) the 4H and FFA kids act as runners going and getting food for the buyers if they wish, other buyers will get up and go get food but it takes them away from the sale for up to an hour sometimes. They used to have a caterer that set up a tent and provided BBQ, tent was just outside the auction area, most buyers brought food right back to their table. Our sale starts at 10 am and usually goes to 5- 5:30, They will run 100+ lambs, 40+ goats, 200+ hogs, 30+ veal, 90-110 steers, and in the breaks between species will sell the grand and reserve turkey, meat chickens, meat rabbits. somethings else to see 4 chickens sell for $1000.00. It makes for a long day and of course the beef always sell last.

Wow, your county fair sounds like mine, except for the 10 days.  Every year the same people are mad because they don't win and they make it miserable for everyone!

OK no fair laughing on this one.  We have one building with a lean to at our fairgrounds.  We live in the smallest county in MO and have about 1200 residents.  Very small show with extremely high quality livestock.  What I love about our livestock show is everyone knows everyone.  I don't worry about my kids wandering near the "carnies" or strangers.  We show everything one day and sell that night.  The local Hy Vee grocery store supplies meat and stuff for a buyers dinner before the sale.  It's a wonderful experience for our children in such a little community.

Oh yeah a local business always sponsors the show shirts so its kinda neat!

I think ours is run pretty nicely. We show one day open and jr then thats it. The next day we have the Meat Animal Sale. All the people who had gotten a buyers number the previous year would get 2 free tickets to the fair for just the sale day. After the sale the buyers settle up(most) and later that week after the fair we have a buyers dinner for all who bought a animal. NOW for the money part thats a joke. They pay in order of the alphabit so say Jack Anderson, Joey Adkins later George Dan and the last theres me Jason Stanton. Say Jack A and George D and Jason S buyers paid no one gets money until Joey pays. Heck everyon with first leter of the last name b-z could pay but no one i mean noone gets money untill all the A's are paid. One year i didnt get my money till January and my fair is in Sept and buyers are suppose to pay up day of sale. The money is the only problem

Our fair is pretty large, we hold the county fair at our state fair grounds. We have a different building for each species of animal, and each one has its own washing area. There is two show rings so each of the animals are spread out through the week. We have tons of rides, stands, and what not set up. Our cattle show on Wednesday and Thursday then the sale is on Saturday.

We live in a verry small county. Our show goes on during the county fair as well. We have the sale a week or to later at the central KY sales pavilion. We have arount 10+ goats and lams, 2 hogs, and 20+ steers. We have a dinner for the buyers, and really nice facilities. Then after the sale we have a party for all the kids.

We live in a big county in Colorado. We have a beautiful fairground. A couple of years ago they built an enormous beef barn. Having said all of that, it's unfortunate that the adults with their immature behavior and ridiculous policies have pretty much ruined it for the kids. Numbers were way down, last year we barely filled half the barn.
Our old beef superintendent had a laid back relaxed open barn as long as his son was showing, but go figure, once his son was gone the barn shut down like a prison. No one can touch another person's cow unless you are an immediate family member or a leader. People sneak fitters in the barn in the middle of the night. It is so competitive between the parents very few of the kids get along.
We end up with a lot of hostility throw our way. Why, because we show throughout the year and have a good program going where our animals come to county fair looking better than the kids that show once a year at fair.
The good news is, we have a new superintendent this year. He's honest, impartial and extremely fair. Imagine this, if your child is in the barn and participating with his animal he doesn't care who's helping! No more Nazi cow police. How refreshing is that!!! Maybe if we are there to educate the kids and public and have a good time we can get our numbers back up!
Our auction is o.k. it's on a Saturday afternoon. We have a buyers buffet set up. No alcohol. We have "beer garden's" set up on the fairgrounds, dumb. Our illustrious fair board came up with this idea of a buy back program. If a buyer buys an animal and decides to donate it back to 4-H at the end of the auction they re auction the animal. Everyone has figured out that these buy backs go for far less money that the original ones auctioned. So needless to say money is down because of the economy and everyone sits and waits for the buy back animals.
We definitely need some new blood on our fair board! The county originally was a small community but now it's one of the biggest in Colorado. We need to dust off the old and bring in some new ideas. It's tough though because it's ran as the good old boys club. I think you have to die or voluntarily leave before they fill your position.

I have a bone to pick with immediate family thing!  My family is very close....heck we all live within a mile of each other.  I am the fitter in my family and I can't even help fit my cousins calf at our county fair. Just a clue on this my cousins father is my uncle.  Maybe I am out of line but family is family!

I couldn't agree more. I've seen what it's done to the 4-H program. Now people sneak fitters in during the middle of the night. Not us, my husband fits for us. But if you call them out on it and they get disqualified from showing watch out because your child will never have another friend in 4H! Imagine this, the last two years the person sneaking the fitter in has won grand champion heifer. Also their heifer is as big as a two year old. Outsizes everything in it's path.
We'll see what happens this year with the new superintendent. Hopefully we'll have a new approach. Other supers (goats, hogs etc.) are angry because they agree with the policy in place. They have no idea the difference between fitting a hog and a cow! We get a lot of flack also because we bring more than one or two cows for my daughter to show. She's showing and going back and forth from the ring so much that it's hard for her to be right there involved in the fitting of each animal.
We only have this year and next to contend with and then she's done. We've been lucky and done well throughout the years. We are taking on an intermediate member who is going to be our little protege. That should tick off enough people who are just waiting for us to go away!

Thank you all for you information, and by the looks of it we all have our small problems at our shows... and in my opinion every thing changes and some stuff need to change in these shows of ours.  and for those that their shows are doing great well i am happy for you all...
