How quick can I AI after calving?

I had a cow last year that took a couple rounds of AI'ing to get her bred now she is "off" from the rest of the herd.  How soon after calving is it safe to try AI'ing.  I guess AI'ing or bull does not matter.

For a bull when she is in standing heat, if AI do the am/pm rule. Most cows will cycle back 45+ days. There is no safety issues trying on the first heat after calving.

Can AI as soon as she comes in heat for you. If I don't see a heat within 60 days I have had good luck synchronizing and then breeding. Of course if you want the best or usually fastest result put her with a bull as soon as she calves.

I have cyders (sp) in 2-3 weeks after calving and got them to stick ai <beer>

Thanks everyone. Good info.  She is scheduled to calve on May 10th.  Was hoping to get her bred ASAP after calving to get her close to the rest of the girls.

If you wait until natural heat your looking at appromiately 60 days before they will come into heat but you can get them goin a little quicker by giving them a shot of Lut a week after calving. I had the same problem with a couple last year and I set them up and bred them at 45 days and they both stuck. I also have a friend that is a little more agressive and is breeding them at 30 days postpartum. So it kind of depends upon how much of a risk your willing to take and how far you want to move them in a given year.

After calving, cows go through a period termed Postpartum Anestrous Interval.  During this interval cows DO NOT have an estrus cycle and pregnancy is NOT possible.  Estrus will not resume until uterine invocation (repair) is completed by the cow (souly depends on how fast the animal will repair, no human intervention can speed this process up).  Postpartume Anestrous can be less than or equal to 45 days.  After this period of time has occured estrus will resume, most likely it will occur within 30 days depending on the animal.  Hope this info is handy.

Somewhat depends in how long you want that Cow to produce. About 60 days gives the cow time to repair.

I had a cow cycle thirty days after calving last year. I Aied her and she caught. Im not saying its going to happen every time but I would keep an eye on her and if she hasn't cycled after 45 days I would consider one of the many options....

Side Note: The cow I was talking about calved in May four years ago then in April twice and now is finally caught back up and is due any day now. It can be done with good management. Good luck!

Thank again for the info.  It took me two years of AI'ing to figure out this cow is off on her cycles.  She is almost 2 days late on every cycle than the rest.  Even when sync'ed.  I have a horrible memory and now know the trick to help get her to stick.  We shoot for late March or April calves as our fair is so late (Sept).  So I'm hoping with some good management I can get her back in a year or two.  I was just curious how soon after birth I could sync her again and I'm leaning towards waiting 60 days to make sure she is all healed up and ready to go.

I've had the same issue and my vet suggested putting the CIDR in on the 21st day after calving and breeding on the completion of that sync. Day 1(8am): CIDR in and hit with Fertagyl. Day 7 (8am): CIDR out and hit with Estrumate. Day 9(12 pm): hit with Fertagyl and breed AI or bull
