What age is that decision made?

I think that is more so personal preference. For me, they must pass certain creteria at different stages of their growth. At birth for instance, needs to be slight assit out of a heifer and moderate BW. Pre weaning phenotype is crucial, however, most calves will go through an awkward stage.

There are many factors and if you go into naming them you're bound to leave one out. But I think it can be pretty well sumed up with Phenotype, Performance, and Pedigree.

And when I say Pedigree I don't mean that they must have this many National Champions, x number of dams of distinction, etc etc. I mean the cattle in their pedigree have to be acceptable. There are some cows out there that we should never be allowed to keep bulls out of.
