I-80 vs. Jesse James

Whats everyone's opinions on which bull is best to work on clubby heifers in general? It seems like no one knew about Jesse James still the Lapke heifer starting winning everything. I-80 has sired a lot of calves it seems but Jesse James is getting all the hype now. Just curious what everyones opinions are.

I would still go with I-80. I think they are both good choices but I-80 has had more good ones. JJ is getting all the hype because Matt owns him and his blog is the best marketing in cattle JMO
And Matt has bought an I-80 calf for a bull prospect already

I asked Matt what bull of his is safest for heifers and he said Jesse James. All my heifers getting Jesse James this spring. Heard of some train wrecks with I80

Ya I see on the blog that he says he doesn't own any of i80, I wonder how that happened, but I see why he's promoting jj, can't really blame him, and there is not one bull that is a sure shot calving ease bull on every single heifer that you breed them to. I don't like when people bad mouth a bull after hearing one or two big calves out of the bull, did u even mind asking about the heifer the calf was out of. We bred our show heifer last year to a calving ease angus bull and had to cut it out. There's proven calving ease bulls but nothings 100%

I have to say that I have used I80 twice and birthweights were different on both, but they were made right to slide right out. I will have to say that I80 will straighten out the backlegs a little more.  I think that it is all up to what you are breeding for if you want a maine breed I80 if you don't breed Jesse James.  It all depends on what you are striving for in your operation

I'm seeing and hearing a lot of different things.  When I called, Phil told me to use I-80.  Matt suggested Ali's Solution...a side note that helped me is that Jesse James is a reg. Chi (approx. 27%) so all heifers will all be registrible as Chi.  A lot of the clubby bulls do not have enough Chi blood for their offspring to be registered.  I understand with steers it doesn't matter but what about all those heifer calves?  With the ACA regulations for % to be 6.25 or higher, it might make those heifers more marketable.  Now, I will not argue the fact that I-80 will give you reg. Maintainer heifers.  Just depends on what you want.  And about the amount of semen sold I see JJ sold a lot less.  I guess I'd rather own a good JJ heifer than an I-80 heifer because there'll be less common and maybe more marketable.  It's really one's own decision because "opinions are like ...holes, everybody's got one".  Educate yourself, talk to people, look at some calves and make up your mind yourself.  Best of luck!

The key word is this is HIS, what bull of his is the safest. I-80 is owned by Phil Lautner and Mike Weidner, Matt has no ownership in him. I would use I-80 also, seen better calves in general. If JJ had been bred to as many heifers last year as I-80 had, there would be train wrecks with him also. When you breed clubby to clubby, that will happen no matter how easy calving they are, you have to account for the female side as it's not just the bull.

Just a correction and a common misconception dealing with the new rules on Chi registrations.  Any cattle can still be registered in the ACA regardless of percentage. The only time the 6.25 rule comes into play is with the national shows (naile, naile Jr show, ft worth, Denver, njhs) where only cattle Registered after Jan 1, 2012 with Greater than 6.25% chi can show. As far as any other shows like beef expos and whatnot any registered chi can still show..

Yes, I'm aware of the reg. requirements for Chi's.  I do know the rule, thank you.  You are right, they all are registrable...but when you live near and show at Fort Worth, or if you want to have a heifer to go to the Jr. Nationals, then it may be important.  If not, then don't worry about it.  It was just a point to consider.

I also said that there is a lot being said about both bulls.  Good points can be made for both.  Each may have their draw backs, but there hasn't really been much you can say bad about either.    As we see more from each bull out of broader range of cattle, not select herds, we'll be better able to judge how they produce.  I've made my choice and I'll live with it.

Just an FYI the Dam of Jesse James was kicked out of the association, so he is now less than 3% Chi.  Had a heifer paper that was 12.74% and just recieved a letter and new papers changing her % to 1.22.

Same thing happened to us last week. Got a paper that said he went from 27.44% to 2.44% and now our heifer was no longer eligible.

I called the ACA the next day.  Jesse James was registered online and his mother was said to be a half blood Chianina.  The computer updates kicked it out.  This does not mean that he's not 27.44% Chi.  It's just that either Matt Lautner or Kent Haun need to register the cow or provide parent verification.  I was told that Matt was made aware of the situation the day it happened.  I haven't heard from him what he was going to do.  I'm waiting to see what happens...but I still have one on the ground and two coming next year.

we sorted calves Monday to sort off the possible sale prospects ... we had 12-15 calves out of  I-80 .. only 2 or 3 sorted into that group and we had to look pretty hard to find those... overall sorted off 30 out of 90

maybe Wisdom ,Striker or more likely Comfort Zone for the heifers  next time ... I really want to try some striker so probably those 2 for me Striker and CZ

Have you seen any Comfort Zones? I bred 1 to him this year. Was not sure what to use him on so I only tried him. Still have a bunch in the tank.

no I haven't seen any CZ's ... just trying to find something to use on these maine heifers to maybe have some sale prospects or something I would keep .. some are lo percentage so a "purebred" will help keep the percentage up... as you know the 75% can show as maines

current pregnancies include Rumor mill and GVC Hawkeye on some purebreds, Suh, Limited edition, I-80 and I-80 full brother....will get to see them in March

I had one bodybuilder steer out of a purebred maine heifer this year  ... he is going to be a passable county fair steer...

I have heard Strikers will really milk and his name comes up sometimes with some pretty nice heifers
