Ideas for toughening up dogs' feet?

I took my dog on a back country horse back riding trip. I planned on being gone for four days but I had to come home after two. My dog tore up his pads to the point that he had to ride on my horse with me. Thanks for any ideas.  I'm wondering about "Tuff Foot" and "Mushers Secret."

Musher's/sled dog folks use a variety of products to protect, heal & toughen up pads.
