No one wants to start over with some nice herefords???  I have always wondered this, why is it in every club calf theres maine, angus, shorthorn, chi, simmental, or charolais but never any hereford.  I believe they could bring a lot to the table with their maternal abilities and structural correctness.  Also there are a lot of hereford bulls throwin that square hip, thick rumped, big boned look that everyone covets.

it probably isn't well known that herefords are in a suprising number of pb maine pedigrees.  i can guarantee you that at some point herefords will make a comeback.

If I ever do have any cows again, I'm going to start with a FULL BLOOD MAINE-ANJOU heifer.  I'm dead set that the MA breed has the best to offer, but I don't like the direction the High Percentage breeders have taken (too short, no extension, light boned).  I'll start with a young heifer and AI her full blood so that I can watch my genius as I bring back the best.

If I were to start over I would get a bunch of belted Galloway's, Scotties, and mini. herfs and start a petting zoo.  Now that would be a good way to make some money.  <cowboy>

I actually wonder the same thing, only why no Gelbvieh. I'm sure the front ends on the old animals is a big reason, but today's Guppy's are pretty clean fronted and have great maternal qualities.

If I were starting over today it would definitely be with Herefords.  Don't know about the rest of the country, but in OK and TX, quality Hereford club calves are very good property.  I also agree that Hereford seedstock is due a surge in demand and value real soon - not saying they're going to take over the world, but they do have a place in the beef industry of the future.

If I was going to start over or had the resources to expand,  I would do some research and find the right Angus base to start with.  I would own a few good donors and stick embryos in those cows and clean up with a Meyer son.  I have been thinking about this but not ready to make the jump.  A close friend of mine has a family operation where they run over a 1,000 commercial Angus cows.  For years they have line bred Rito 707(I beilieve) into there herd.  He just called me the other day to inquire what real good commercial Angus would be worth if bred to the right bull.  He has a couple hundred heifers out of OCC Prototype out of the mature cows and the heifers were AI'd to Homer and they're keepen replacements out of them as well.  I told him to get them calved out and breed them to a bull like Dr Meyer, Mommas Boy or Climax and even though commercial cattle should be worth something.

I would like to take a set of cows with bloodlines like these and breed them two ways.  Half to a Simi like Climax and the other half to Whiskey or one of the Bushy Park bulls.  I know Whiskey is PHA positive but if your focus is clubcalves and not Maines, who cares?  The next generation, most of the good clubby bulls are TH positive and not PHA Positive.

This is my thoughts on starting over.  I need to get down to see these heifers.

If I were going to start from scratch, I would buy a bunch of angus cows from people who concentrate on the right type of angus. I would not buy angus for club calf production from breeders that put 90% of their emphasis on EPDs. Angus bloodlines like the OCC, TC Stockman, Northern Improvement... should do the trick. I would then breed those cows to bulls like Ali, Who Made Who, Chill Factor, Meyer(or sons), or Dr. Who. This way you will get replacements close to what you will need to make those good show steers. I would also study pedigrees of really good calves out there at the moment. For example, Vicklands have that calf that has won a bunch already this winter that is a Heatwave x Who Made Who x Angus(according to Frozen Gold Catalog). Whether you like that calf or not that is not a bad combo. Keeping the angus in their close should help with calving ease too to moderate out some birthweights of these club calves.
