IN DEW TIME BULL CALF

Hello everyone 
I was looking for your opinion on this bull calf. He was born June 26, 2015. His sire is In Dew Time, the Simmental bull. His dam is a registered Mainetainer with Angus & Hereford influence.  The first two pictures are when he was 1 day old with his dam. The next two pictures show him at 1 month old.  I realize his birthdate could hinder him, but what are your opinions as far as...
1.  Keep him a bull to market as an own son of In Dew Time?
2. Steer him as a 4-H/ show steer? (He has a wonderful disposition.)
3. Steer him & send him to the local sale barn?

He looks ok but I think you're jumping the gun a bit.  Let him grow and see how he develops.  I have March calves that are just starting to bloom now.  Pretty tough to judge a June baby.

I agree, he's young, and not developed yet.  I guess I'm just really excited about him and wondered what others thought  ;D

too much crossing in there for a bull prospect, so I would cut or plan to cut him....and then grow him for a while to determine where he goes from there...

I would let him grow and see how he develops.  What will he look like at 3 months of age?  weaning?  What was his birth weight?  How well will he grow?

With his sire being a PB Simmental, this means that his calf is 50% Simmental.  How is the performance and what is the pedigree of his dam?  If her breeding is from some well known animals, and if her performance is good and if she has had other offspring that have performed well, does not mean he wouldn't make a bull.

cbcr,  Thanks for your reply.  I agree that we should continue to evaluate him as he grows.  I just wondered of any positive or negative points about him from more experienced breeders 
His dam's performance record is incomplete, but her sire is CHF DR CHILL and her paternal grandsire is THE WITCH DOCTOR.

Another thing that you could do would be to do a DNA test on him.  Doing so would also give you some idea!

OP, as far as keeping as a bull prospect, we're talking about a 4 breed bull calf already, so he's not going to bring much, if any, heterosis to the table for a breeder.  Sounds like the makings of a good steer prospect to me.  Also, I don't know much about In Dew Time as a club calf sire, but he is a nice Simmy bull.

With his sire being a PB Simmental, this means that his calf is 50% Simmental.   

Maybe on paper but not as far as genotype is concerned.  A purebred Simmental can be registered at 7/8 or 87% .  That means with the 1/8th portion alone, you can have up to 13% non 'purebred Simmental' blood.  Additionally, the other 7/8ths or 87% of the makeup doesn't even have to be Simmental but rather only *purebred* Simmental.  The amount of actual Simmental blood in the 7/8ths portion of a purebred Simmental is likely not even 7/8ths.  Even if it were 7/8ths, this means a '7/8ths registered purebred Simmental' could very well have less than 76% (7/8ths of 87.5) Simmental blood. This puts the Simmental blood in a purebred Simmental sired calf (bred to non simm cow) down around the 38% mark at best.  Calves sired by a 'Simangus' bull (half purebred simm / half angus) could be less than 19% Simmental blood.

I don't know if you have looked at some of the club calf bulls, but there are quiet a few that 3, 4 and more. WMW is a prime example.
