Indiana farmer pinned, killed under hay bale

Greensburg - A farmer died over the weekend in southeastern Indiana after being pinned beneath a round bale of hay he and another person were moving.

The Decatur County Sheriff's Department says deputies arrived at the farm of 63-year-old John Bennett near Greensburg to find him beneath the large bale and without a pulse. The Republic of Columbus reports a deputy performed CPR at the scene Saturday, but Bennett was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.

Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks ruled Bennett died of traumatic cardiac and respiratory arrest caused by blunt force trauma.

Be careful out there as we just never know what will happen next

I narrowly missed meeting my maker when a bale rolled back off my loader and over me while I was moving bales in 2006.    I was very lucky to survive!!  The bale split my sternum(my knee actually did the damage from the bottom), cracked three ribs, and damaged both ends of my right collarbone.  My shoulder will probably never be quite the same.  Fortunately, the bale bounced on me and then kept rolling right over the back of the tractor.  If it hadn't here was certainly no one there to help me and I wouldn't be able to write this today.  The bale actually would have killed me but it hit my back, the steering wheel, and the fender all at the same time.  It broke the steering wheel right off and bent the fender up some.  I know one thing---you're not gonna win an argument with a 1500 pound bale when it gets on top of you!!

A close friend of mine was killed when a round bale came off a stack and pinned him a couple of years ago and , of course, Kent Haberger, who was known by many in the industry,  was killed when a bale came off his loader on top of him.

Its just too easy to get in a hurry or just lose your concentration when lifting and moving that much weight.    Believe me, I know what a round bale looks like when its rolling down the arms of your loader right at you----I don't want any of my SP friends to ever experience that!!!
