This has to stink for some of those staying back in Iowa!

Will Iowans see Hawkeyes in Orange Bowl?
By MELANIE S. WELTE - The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa — While the Iowa Hawkeyes prepare for their biggest bowl game in years, thousands of their fans back home may be scrambling to find a TV to watch them.

Sinclair Broadcasting Group’s demand that cable company Mediacom Communications Corp. pay more to carry its stations could leave 700,000 cable subscribers in 11 states without some local channels on Jan. 1.

That includes about 400,000 subscribers in Iowa, most of whom will lose the channel televising the Jan. 5 Orange Bowl between Iowa and Georgia Tech.

The cable showdown is part of a long-running national battle over what are known as carriage fees. Cable TV operators claim owners of broadcast stations and cable channels are gouging their customers by demanding ever-rising payments. Content owners respond that cable companies earn outsized profits by simply retransmitting their valuable channels

I disagree with the AP writer's assertion that this is the biggest bowl game in years for the Hawkeyes.....They have been a new year's day regular for a while now....

That sucks.  Most Mediacom subscribers close enough to a tower could use an antenna and still pull in the local CBS station with a digital receiver box or a HDTV that's capable.  I have Directv and live about 15 miles from the tower and just use rabbit ears and an HDTV rather than paying the $5/month for the locals.

It still brings into play the fact that the subscribers are paying for Mediacom so that they don't have to go buy a receiver or a HDTV, but there are options that aren't high cost if you live close enough.  It seems like Fox and Mediacom are always at odds.  The last time was the B10 Network.  It's too bad for all the subscribers.

Also I agree with iowabeef.  All bowl games are big but I would have said the BCS game with USC a few years back was a little bigger due to having the national stage against a storied program.  Not trying to take anything away from Georgia Tech but beating USC does wonders for potential recruiting, etc.  Unfortunately, we didn't beat USC.  Hope this time around in the BCS turns out much differently for my beloved Hawks.  <beer>

I have directTV, and if I an unable to watch the bowl game, I will drop them like a hot potato. As well as writing and calling everyone associated with directTV.
A PO'd cow will have nothing on me if I can not watch the game.....

I am picking the Hawks, but 9. GO HAWKS!!!

firstoff go hawks and clones!!!
one thing this mediacom deal will do is cement who(whom?) our carrier will be! Up here in nw corner we have a big push to use Premier. If they do not deliver game we will be in Sioux falls settin in a hawk party and they will be sucking pond water! They already did this type action with Big Ten network and we lost a year of basketball tv rights because of contractual problems. We have three choices direct premier hickorytech,oh and local-it may be winner take all!
