speaking of older black maine bulls- what options would be available for a hetero black purebred, or high percentage maine bull that will downsize frame, add body, and thickness.

Some older black high percentage Maine-Anjou bulls that, in my opinion only, will downsize frame, add body, and thickness are Wonder, a DJ Reflector x Powerplant son, Taz, and Maine Break. Again, these are older Maine-Anjou genetics that worked well for our operation, and I believe still have a place in today's industry.

Another bull that worked well for us and fits your description is DVMM Jazz. We have a nicely designed Jazz x Angus cow that has produced very well throughout her career.

I had forgotten about Taz, but, In my opinion, he will transfer more style and less frame than any of the others mentioned.  On the other hand, DVMM Jazz is the only train wreck I ever had!  Of the three calves I had, all were pitiful!

Thank You. That makes me feel better.  I am looking for big things from this heifer. If shes going to be crappy all my dreams are crushed.

Always hope for the Best, but never fear the Worst.  In this business each day can bring a totally different outcome.  It's obvious by the picture you have a very nice heifer.  When searching for a Bull, look for traits in the bull which you don't see or are in need of improvement in the cow.  Statistics will tell you the Bull supplies more heritable traits than the Cow.  Old Cattlemen will tell you the Cows supplies more heritable traits than the Bull.  I believed in the Old Cattleman who was my mentor.  He told me to always bred for what you need, and not worry about calf size.  In 17 years, I pulled only 2 calves, and never searched for a low birth weight bull.  He also told me that continual breeding for low birth weight, will produce calves with continual smaller pelvic area, which translates to more calving problems.  Just some thoughts!

agree on the magic.  good luck finding any.

We are quite fortunate to have 10 units of FR Magic 179X semen in our tank; we, too, have embryos from a past donor cow, MCG Krystal, a Goldstream 5T daughter, and FR Magic. I am planning on putting in some of those eggs for 2014 calves. Of course, I am hoping for females.

Any update?

Thanks for the question, Knabe.  We put in two FR Magic 179X x MCG Krystal 6Y eggs in July; unfortunately, only one stuck.  We are expecting that calf in April.  In staying with utilizing older Maine-Anjou genetics, I am also expecting a Black Impact x Krystal calf in April.
