Everyone always says this years calf crop is the best they've ever had.
Doesn't keep prices from going up. Like chambero and jlingle are saying, market price has gone up considerably in the past year, thus the price of show prospect calves has gone up, too. Especially the lower end - what was a $1500 steer last year is likely $2000 or more this year (in this part of the country anyway). Arguably, you can say that the $1500 is still a premium over market, but if you factor in the extra feed and work most folks put into the calves they're trying to sell for show prospects, it may not actually be. Also, when just hauling them to the sale barn straight off the cow is as lucrative as it was this spring, some of those folks that tried to sell $1500 steers before are happily just taking their check at the sale barn, so the supply becomes a little more limited. Thus the effect ripples right on through the whole club calf market.
The whole thing does sound kinda fishy. I completely agree that the breeder/trader needs to make it right, but as others have said you may have to accept the fact that it still may cost you something to get just what you want.
