Finally we can admit all of those early calves have been born. Or do we wait until tomorrow because a 1/1 birthdate would be to obvious. ))

itk....wait until the 3rd. No one will ever guess that your calves had two inch belly hair when they were born.

I have been trying to figure out how a guy I know, seems to have most of his calves born on the 3rd day of each month... at least the ones that get into his show string. Most will have birth dates of January 3rd, March 3rd, May 3rd, etc. Amazing isn't it? I wish I knew his secret as to how he can get his cows to calve on specific days. But then, he has also figured out how to keep his birth weights in line. He seldom has a BW over 90 lbs and never assists a birth. I guess there are a few trade secrets that many of us will never know. 

It is also interesting to note that I have heard this man complain that his cattle never seem to sell for as much as some other people's cattle, even though his are as good or better. I guess there are a few things this guy will never figure out as well. I guess the message is...if you can't be honest about a birth date or a birth weight, then what else are you being dishonest about?

I know what you mean JIT, I sold a guy a bred hfr in '07 that was AI'd with no exposure to a bull. The cow was due at the end of May, when he sold the hfr in '08 she was born in August '08. And to think ,I thought I'd had some recips go past their due date a little too long before.

We had a wonderful New Year's Eve!!! I spent most of the day trying to thaw out the fuel lines on my tractor, and ended up towing it into a heated shop for the night. After borrowing my neighbours new John Deere tractor( I now know what I want for Christmas next year!)  and getting the cattle all fed, it started to blizzard. After a trying trip taking the tractor back, and barely seeing where the road was, my wife and I decided to stay at home and watch a couple movies. To say I am really tired of winter already would be a huge understatement!!.... and my wife says I still smell like diesel fuel even though I have showered and scrubbed my hands and arms several times. Days like this take a little of the romance out of the cattle business!
