I know he has been the amoung the highest number of registrations for a few years now. So his impact has been very significante to the Shorthorn breed.
As far as the Shorthorn country doing that story i wouldnt count on it. Have you guys read the puff pieces they put in that thing? Half the time they have little or no real insight into  the breed. Besides JPJ is not inline with the bloodlines being promoted on the Shorthorn country, ya would more than likey have to buy the space and write the story yourself.

I will preface this by saying I know next to nothing when it comes to the show ring and breeding shows.  But I do know that here in Texas JPJ has sired several show steers - yes, more than one - five in our county alone, and quite a few more across the state that I know were JPJ steers - that have been branded in FW and Houston.  FW shows the light wt classes of AOB steers on Thursday night and in our experience the JPJ steers are moderate framed, what I call boxes of meat.  They fit really well in these classes as they are also easy to put some finish on 900 to 1050 lb. steers.  Anyone watching these classes knows they are small framed, heavy muscled, but do have to have some finish to get branded.  Another plus is they  work well for smaller or younger kids showing.  Thats the only point I wanted to make is that for light weight steers here in Texas we've found that JPJ can sure work.

And if JPJ sires good 1000lb finished steers, good for him, but that's about 300 lbs away from anything that wins shows north of Texas.

you're absolutely right, 1000 lb is 275 to 300 pounds shy of anything winning here in Texas also.  But a vast number of families show steers at FW hoping to get a brand and make the sale.  Somebody has to be a light weight.  I felt we had a lot better chance getting branded in a light weight class than middles or heavies, therefore we bought and fed steers, be it Herefords, Shorthorns or AOB's, that our target was the light weight class.  I totally agree with you on the 1275 to 1300 champion.  We just had a lot more luck getting branded with lightweights.  I did buy a JPJ heifer several years back that did not have enough grow in her to make the kind of cow I wanted.  Was hoping to get a good steer mama but didn't happen.  But JPJ sired some easy feeding, early maturing steers that we were lucky enough to get branded.

How many JPJ sired calves have you personally raised?

Bred 0. Fed 1. Have seen lots of them though.

Maybe we had a freak but we showed ours at 1285 and won Reserve Grand at our State Show - also had another younger steer that we sold that got to 1330 and was Reserve Breed at a Big Show out West - maybe we just had the exception and not the norm ?? He does what he does well - not for everyone - I will use him until there is no more semen - we are feeding one we raised right now.

Our JPJ heifer that my daughter is showing is unbeaten in class at the Texas majors and just won Grand Champion at the East Texas State Fair. I think we will use him again on that cow!

I would have to say this is a case of to each his own.
I think Glover's have had some success with Jazz and looks like they have had some high sellers. Maybe this is an isolated case?

I am using a Jazz bred son out of a Cal Poly cow as a herd bull. The one thing we have had out of his first calf crop is consistency. The calves have come small and are growing quiet well. I used him on everything from clubby bred Heat Wave daughters to rodeo drive cow. The Rodeo Drive cow had the smallest calf she has ever had. Time will tell I guess.

I'm going to agree with OHB. To each their own. I don't like JPJ, won't use JPJ and think that as much as he's been used that most of his calves are just average calves at best. JMHO. There is no denying people have used him and made money doing it and that is what it is all about. I have seen some nice JPJ calves but the majority I have seen are too moderate, short necked, with extra leather up front . Just not my cup of tea.
