Kinnaber Leader 9th - Big Gene

I have dug through old posts and read up on Big Gene, but does anyone have a photo? 

My dear old dad claims he was a "big bull"  -  how big was he?  In today's world, would he be a Frame 5?  6?  or more? 

And it appears as if he and Leader 6th were full brothers, correct?

Leader 9th and Leader 6th were full brothers. Leader 6th was probably the more impressive bull, but keep in mind that he spent his first few years breeding a herd of 6 females at Pheasant Creek, Lorlie, SK. Some people say that Leader 9th was the best breeding bull of them, and I am not 100% sure if this is correct or not. There were many more Leader 9th offspring than Leader 6th offspring. Both bulls were definitely good breeding bulls for that time in history. Leader 6th was reported to be a 2400 lb bull at maturity  and I think Leader 9th was called a 2250 lb bull at maturity. Leader 9th wass used heavily in the Kenmar herd before he went to stud, and as I said, Leader 6th lived in a 5 star hotel, with a pretty good restaurant at Pheasant Creek. Both these bulls were considered big when they were alive, but then, so was their sire Leader 21st. I think both these bulls would be considered moderate framed bulls today.
Somewhere I have a couple pictures of a Leader 9th cow at Muridale, but I can't seem to see them right now. They were pretty impressive females and coyote may be able to find some on his computer before I do. They were the type of cows that most anyone would be proud to have in their herd today.

I found one of the pics I took of a Leader 9th daughter at Muridale a few years ago. Still looking for some others.

This cow was about as functional and sound as you could find anywhere, and I believe she has produced some outstanding offspring for them.

I'm a little more happy now that I know that I own a good amount ampoles here.
Maybe can use Super Flag or P.Dawn Seal 2nd on these calves after.

Not to doubt CSI, but are we certain the 2 bull pictures in this post are the same bull?
The roaning (if that's a word) doesn't look the same- even accounting for opposite sides.

Yes, those are both pictures of Leader 9th.  One reason he looks different, other than color, is his stage of maturity, don't you think?  We were not keen about his white belt on one side, but most of his non-red calves were more even roan. We used him and liked his calves, especially the daughters.  Big Gene sired more uniform calves than old Leader 21.  However, Bob Gordon said that the very best of the 21st calves were superior to the top ones by Leader 9th.

I am more pleased with my Leader 9th son, which I believe is a full brother to the Big Gene daughter pictured, every day.  I originally purchased him sight unseen strictly to use on heifers.  I frankly was not expecting the calves to be as good as they have turned out to be.  100% polled calves, mostly the nice roan color I prefer, like their sire.  They do not perform quite as well as my Zulu calves, which I expected, but they are quite satisfactory in their growth rate.  They are pleasing to the eye as well.  I personally think the good Muridale cow he's out of helped out a lot.  I'm looking forward to his first daughters entering production.  I posted photos of 2 fall bull calves out of my bull quite a while ago.  I have more recent photos taken in late February that my daughter will put on as soon as she has time.

That 9 - 18 calf has an interesting pedigree.

Big Gene calves were docile and his daughters milked well.  Leader 9th calving ease and marbling are outstanding!  The challenge is to blend these old (almost 50 years) genetics with some of the growth and other traits we expect now in our cattle.

Also have same doubt!
But, was a scan that I did from official catalogues.

The embryo mating of Oakview's bull sold in our 2006 or 2007 and for decent money. I had purchased a large portion of Leader 9th semen and sold some each year as well. We had a slide show displaying older bulls including "big gene", leader 9th's nick name is after the former Gene McDonald who apparently loved this bull for his growth. Gene, if you're too young to remember was a representative of Shorthorn Country and ASA Field person.

Own a couple two years old heifers.
Good ones, like her shape.
Will inseminate on next spring possibly with an argentinian bull or with an old bull, maybe Super Flag, Meriwong Smuggler or Leader 9th again. Also on plans take some embryos by IFV and after inseminate the girls
A roan and a red heifer.
They are deep ribbed, good loin, and good character.

Two fall bull calves sired by my Leader 9th son.  Light roan out of a Deerpark Leader 18th first calf heifer, darker roan out of a first calf heifer out of a home raised grandson of Trump.  Photos taken in late February with all their winter hair and a little mud.  Calves have been weaned for 3 weeks now and look very good.
