Lice help!!!

Good Monday morning to everyone.  I came across this site by sheer accident googling for help on a lice problem with my daughters show steer.  We have the San Antonio stock show this week.  We were slicking him Friday afternoon and noticed a spot on his front leg about 2" round with no hair.  We have religiously kept his stall clean and sprayed his stall with Permethrin.  I guess we should've been spraying him too.  Question is, at this point, is it worth going to the show?  Can I use the permethrin diluted on the steer?  And is it too late to stop the hair loss on him?  I appreciate the help.

Oh I'm sure.  I seen the little basta$&@s running around in his hair.  We immediately washed him down after slicking him, and sprayed a light coat of diluted permethrin 10 on him, brushed it in and let him sit overnight.  Just wasn't sure if anyone has had good luck with permethrin without hurting the animal.

Yes, I would take him.  If you plan to go on to Austin or Houston treat him with this when you get home.  Its been bad this year in Texas..G-Luck  Oh, and its time to go get in line

Will they ding us if we spray him with the Permethrin 10 for having a chemical residue on him?

If you are worries about the chemicals there are alternatives.  This is a link that has some slides with some information.  I know it deals with human lice, but the information should still be valid for cattle.

These slides talk about using oils to suffocate the lice and then comb them out.  But at the same time reapplying the oils also as a prevention.  One of the slides list various oils that can be used.  A school had an issue with lice and we were visiting with a parent that had done this search.  She used the Tea Tree Oil (which is available from Walmart) and they have had not issues with lice.

I'm with Ms Ray about it being ringworm and not just lice. The calf can have both and what you described sounds exactly like ringworm. Lice don't take hair off in an almost perfect circle. May be worth cking into treating for both or at least have a friend that has had experience with ringworm take a look at what you were describing.
