Likelyhood of a false heat?

OK I'm confused

"Our AI'er almosts always says the cows are in good heats, even when she hasnt been standing. But he has done good for us in the past so I'm gonna trust with any decisions he makes. Does everyone use CIDRs and Lutilize? We've never used either always bred natural heats, only had one that had to go to the bull. But then again theres only seven cows"

You only breed on observed natural heats, but then say that your AI tech says that they are in good heats even when she hasn't been standing.  So did you have him come to AI on observed heats or just time breeding them?

He bred one on an observed heat. He asked us if we had any others and we told him no, but one was suppose to be in that day and she wasnt. (21 days) And we didnt see her standing all day. But we brought her in and felt around inside and said she had just come in a couple hours ago and to go ahead and breed. So we did. But we always breed on observed heats, unless he feals around in one and says she's in. He's be ai'ing for32 years and is darn good at it.

Telling there in heat by feel, he must be good? Please quiz him for us and let us know on how he can tell they are in heat by feel. Make sure you get very specific details.

In Ohio our A.I. guy was a dairy guy.  He was an ABS rep. for 35 years and he said you can in no way truely feel if they are ready.  Our new ABS rep breeds about 500 beef cattle a year and he says the same thing.  He said if he hears "How she feel" one more time he may just die lol.

I'm just telling you what he told me. I guess I really dont know how he did it by feel either, but he's been AIing for 32 years and over the past couple years he's only missed one cow. I'll ask him though and tell ya what he says.

i watched the bull breed 1 and another one had some cloudy mucus but wasn't getting rode or anything. other than that, nothing that ive seen. ill let you know in february

On A.I. breeding, use of CIDRS, Lute, GnRH, etc, there are way too many reputable and published sources available to simply listen to a single breeders opinion.  If you are told to use a different protocol than those researched and demonstrated to be most effective, then I would be VERY skeptical.

Check out and educate yourself with the many publications from Ohio State, Purdue, etc.  There is a wealth of solid info out there on reproduction and various strategies.  And, the sample sizes are way more cows than 500 in most cases.

No substitute for well designed and controlled research.
