I have some small framed (4-5 frame), deep sided, soft made,  moderate boned, fairly heavy muscled both tops and butts, good structured cows.  However, they are also, plain to short fronted and not much hair, and do not have that "showring style" or phenotype.  My goal is to produce show steers with these cows.

When bred to most of today's popular clubby A. I. sires, I am getting 48" to 50" steers, and they do not improve the fronts.

With todays trends in the showring, I feel I need to increase the frame size of my steers to 50" to 52" or a little bigger.  I have spoken with other cattlemen and even one semen distributor trying to come up with a "short list" of bulls to use.

My question is to those cattlemen out there that have some similar cows as mine.  Please give me your advice on what experiences you have had, and what bulls have worked for you.

The Question is...

What A. I. club calf bull will increase frame size, add hair, has a "rocket" front end, and thro's showring style.

Thanks,

I've always heard Hannibal does a great job of doing this. Haven't had them personally but this seems to be one that usually works.

Hannibal is the first bull that came to my mind.  He does exactly what you are looking to do.

Find a Genetics Horizon catalog from @1995 and throw a dart. Windsor (if you could find it) Throttle, or any of a number of Sugar Ray sons with hair would do what you are looking for. My Full Flush calves were always a tic big but were cool and hairy. Cant say as you could go wrong there.

If your interested in making some smokie calves there are a few options.  Many of the Charolais bulls will add some grow and frame and give you good hair with great fronts.  A pure bred bull we have an interest in has done a great job of giving the calves some grow with great fronts and hair.  He is RCC Cold Front.  You can check him out at  www.redalencattleco.com    He is available thru Cattle Visions.  We have some pictures on our site at  www.rtmcattleco.com  under the "COLD FRONT CALVES" page you can check out.

Freddy on here has some great looking Charolais cross bulls out.  You can check them out at http://www.fredranch.com/

Those smokie females will usually make great replacement heifers if you don't show them.

We have shown some good calves out of Friction, could look at one of his sons, Jigsaw, also, I think both fit what you are looking for.

I think that Hannibal will do the things that you are asking. If your cows are smooth shouldered I would also recommend Hired Man. I know he has a terrible set of front shoulders on him, but most of his calves that I have seen don't show this. Might also try Manchild if your cows are good on their feet and pasterns.

I have used Hannibal and Manchild and have had pretty good results. This year I am trying Golden Child on a cow that has thrown a little small with Heatseeker and Direct Hit. Our Shockwaves have added a little frame as well.

In our experience Dr. Who and Get It Done will add frame, but the fronts might not be that good. Get It Dones haven't been our soundest creatures either.

Hope this helps.

From my experience, my Sin City calves were a tad to big for my taste, so he should add some frame for you.  All mine were nice fronted, and extremely hairy.  In my opinion he'd do the job.

HAnnibal, Hannibal, Hannibal!  just what he needs.  I don't count on him to add a lot of extra power, but i have not used a bull that will pretty one up any better in recent times.  Although he won't necessarily add frame you might try WMW as well. He is a cow changer and can turn a plain one into a pretty salty show prospect.  I personally would stay away from Power Plant.  Too much baggage with him up close in a pedigree.  structure and monkey mouths for starters.

Thanks,    Foreplay and Full Flush will get it done .

Anyone else notice a scary trend here, if you ask for a clubby bull to downsize there are unlimited choices, doesn't seem to be much on the other end.

Exactly!

I've used Hannibal (even flushed to him), just not great calves for me, and not enough muscle.  Maybe it's me and my cows don't niche.

I've used Foreplay and love him but no bone or hair.

I've used Friction (flushed to him also), and like him but he did not increase much frame, and sorry, not rocket fronted.

I never used Full Flush himself, and I was under the opinion that he, and his sons, did not have much hair?

I don't believe that most PB Maines, even thoulgh they would definitely increase frame size, are not good enough fronted to be a "changer" on front ends.  IMO

Power Plant...PB Maine and to many problems as noted in an earlier post.

Ildeno...get real!!  Mule foot, white and BALD!!

Windsor...interesting, can you still get semen?

Charlais and crosses, interesting, there are so many out there, I would not know where to start.  Hoo Doo Farm?

Anyone use much Manchild (I know he is a Hannibal son)?  Wondering if he would increase frame size?  It seems he might work.

Yet people believe that they need to lie about ages so that their cattle appear to have more growth. Something seems to be backwards.

ildeno was supposedly tested on over 20 own daughters and no mule foot.  i didn't see the test results, but know the guy who was aware of test and he said no mule foot.  doesn't mean he doesn't have it.

you won't get the fuzz hairs with ildeno, and remember some with decent hair including some i showed.  also, rib eyes are smaller per 100 lbs of carcass weight.

I think this is exactly why we keep semen in the tank on those old bulls.  You never know when we'll need to go back.
