...just curious....do the people that allegedly buy and don't pay actually show up at the auction, then leave without finishing the transaction, or are they bidding online or over the telephone? just curious what the typical way they try to accomplish this...and do they ever leave with the animals or embryos without allegedly paying? thanks.

Is Canadian money legit?.......Oh lord forgive me. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not in the US. I have never met an American who agreed to take Canadian dollars for cattle. We always have to pay in US dollars. It also is the same in reverse, in that, when an American buys Canadian cattle, they always want to pay in US dollars. So, us Canadians being so moderate and understanding, always are willing to do this, and it oftentimes leads to us losing money in the process.

Everytime I accept an American check, I know full well, that I may end up with a few less dollars than what I agreed to sell the animal(s) for. Several things can cause this. For example, when I take a US check to my bank, they then send it to an American clearing house and it can take several days to 3 weeks to clear. By this time, the exchange rate could have changed substantially. Occasionally it can work that you actually end up with a few more Canadian dollars if the Canadian dollar gets stronger, but in my experience, this only happens in less than 10% of my transactions. I had a large production sale a few years ago, in which I had 60 head sell to US buyers. By the time all the checks cleared the bank, I had lost almost $5000 from the selling prices in the sale. There is really no way to collect this, so you just accept it.
One thing most people do not consider when they accept a check in US funds, is that the banks take 3-4 % just for handling it. This is an complete money grab... but how do you fight a bank?
I know most sales managers are now doing the money exchange calculations with a slightly different exchange rate than the daily rate quoted by the bank, just so there is a little protection for the seller.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, most US banks will not convert Canadian funds to US funds. I have always wondered about that, as all they have to do is check out the bank's exchange rate and do the math. Here in Canada, I think you can convert most any countries money into dollars at any time. If you are going to another country, and want to get some of that countries money before you leave, it may take a day or so to get it, as every local bank doesn't keep all currencies, but usually their regional office will have it.

Hey JIT, I must admit, I have looked at cattle in Canada KNOWING the exchange rate is in my favor. But I didn't know what a hassle it was if I wrote a check. By the time you lose from the exchange rate, then another 3-4% to the banks, then wait 3-4 weeks for the check to clear so you can get the money in your account?  GEESH.... that would turn anyone off to American buyers. Has anyone thought of adding a fee to cover some of those costs?

Unfortunately, no hall of shame, too many liability issues.  It sounds like this is an habitual offender and hopefully the law will step in and sort this mess out.

if there's an arrest and a follow up by the press, one could post a link to that without liability.

also, if sheriff's office  # could be posted, other people could call and really put the hammer down.
