Lutalyse for timed A.I.

A while back I heard some talk about synchronizing a group of cattle to A.I. With 2 shots of lutalyse and nothing else. Any feedback on this method? Anyone have a time schedule for when to give the shots? Just curious about this method. Thanks!

I'd call that bunching more than synchronizing.  You have to heat check with that method but the heat checking is only a few days rather than a few weeks.

I worked for a vet when I was in college who set up a few herds to AI with a Lutalyse protocal.  I believe it was a shot on day 0 then another on day 11.  Then we bred the entire group 48 and then 72 hours after the 2nd shot.  I think you could also split the difference and breed once at 60 hours after the last shot.  If you are doing it yourself you should heat detect after the first shot because some of your cows will cycle then.

This method is probably not as good as syncronizing with CIDRs, but it's definitely cheaper.  I would give the cows a shot of GHRH when you breed them too.

What are your conception rates with your protocol Cowman?

Worst was 65, cows a little thin, pastures not real good, best was 119 out of 124, had been on the place 4 years, they let me take good care of the cattle, and probably most important, I knew every cow on the place, we fed extruded cotton seed for 30 days before we started, cows could not have worked better.

When I took my AI course my instructors told me never think I would be more succesful with AI than a real bull is naturally.  Anything over 50-55% on a large synchronized group is fine.  I had a disaster last fall due to our drought + cold/wet weather during breeding.  Wound up with about 25% success on around 125 head.

Just put the CIDRS in on Saturday, so I'll know in a few months.

My vet recommended that I add a CIDR to it the protocol because it would increase conception to about 65%. Only time will tell I guess..haha.

Chambero, I had a similar problem with the last shot I gave the cows freezing in the shrynge, and averaged 1 out of 10.  On heifers I have gotten 50-67% most of the time and once 80%.  On cows if the weather condition are right I have gotten 100% on 12 cows one time in 35 years with the average on most years 80-82%.  Conditions really play a part and timing.  I have actually had as low on cows as 25% one other time.  Even bulls do not hit 100% every time.
