anyone ever shot an M1 Garand?

what type of hunting is it good for?

have a friend who just received his license to purchase and transfer these.

there are some nice models available from the government for the civilian marksmanship program.

well, according to call of duty 5, world at war, they are a medium to long range weapon with moderate capacity and relatively high damage. you can put a sniper scope on it and it becomes an effective weapon at long range.  ;D

I have found that the best way to figure what a gun will work good for is to go out and shoot it and see what it will kill.  You would be surprised what you can kill with a .223 for instance.

They came in standard .30-06 caliber, but some may have been modified to other calibers such as .308.  Either one would be adequate for deer and elk if you are shooting 250 yd or less with high quality bullets.

i guess i should have been a little more explicit as i am interested in the .30-06.  not much can be had in the .30-06 anymore, and Dusty is correct about the .223.

I hunt a lot and a 30.06 is an extremely versatile round.  Lots of bullet choices make it suitable for anyrthing in N America, except for the coastal grizzlies.  The Garand really aint a hunting rifle - its too heavy.  It holds 8 cartridges which may make it illegal for hunting big game in some states.  Most modern rifles hold 4-f cartridges.

If I was in Iraq or Afganistan, I'd rather have a Garand than the pea shooters they use now.

a tick on the heavy ( cumbersome ) side...extremely accurate ( if they are not shot out)..extremely reliable and rugged ( bolt action)  ....and either 30/06 or .308  @ 250 yds is quite impressive both with accuracy and kill power..a nice piece to have for sure...probally not the prettiest gun in the cabinet...but it sure does do what it was made for.  jbarl

The garand was a semi auto not a bolt action.

Don't know a thing about the Garand, but I do own a German Mauser K98k my Dad took off a dead German in WWII.  It was the only gun he came home with.  I've never shot it, but I know the actions are in huge demand by Gunsmiths.

I've killed every thing from groundhogs to deer with mine.  It is heavy but with that said it is much more acurate than my Rem 700 with the same 145gr loads.

I wish my Grandpa could have brought home a K98k, I've heard they're excellent guns.  I also wish he could have brought home a Garand in a .30-06, and an MP-40.  I've never shot any of those guns, but I've seen them, and they're good for killin Krauts on Call of Duty 3 and World at War.

The accuarcy of your 700 may be due to wrong bullet selection, depending on the twist rate of your rifles barrel you may experiance greater accuracy with the 165 gr bullets. The Remington 700 is among the greatest bolt action rifles in the world.  As for the M1 I am a huge fan of them. Keep in mind they sight with the pumpkin on a post sight picture, and require the 8 round box magazine that can be a huge pain in the hind quarter (thumbsup). They came standard with the military two stage trigger and can be worked over to meet your needs. If you have the opportunity to get your hands on one in good shape and the throat isnt pitted your in great shape. Hope this helped. (thumbsup)
