But Dusty, how much is it going to cost to either dig a hole or get the rendering works to pick them up??     It's a matter of choosing how you would loose the least.

The rendering plant charges 37.50 to pick one up, for us to dig a hole it is 110.00 minimum.

Jill, do they have a different price for horses?  The company that picks up for us has a stop fee & then a price for cattle which makes it about the same as you pay.  However the horse price is around $100.

Interesting that scrap iron was $240/ton one month ago and is $30 now.  Stock Market has dropped 800 points since Tues.

Who still has calves to sell this fall and what are your plans to deflect the market.?

My luck would have it happen mid summer when the ground is rock hard or mid winter when it is frozen!!

How much would it cost to have a backhoe dig a hole?   We happen to own a back hoe so it is a non issue but just curious.

What do the rendering works charge for a pickup?   Last I heard a horse was $100.

In the last 5 years I've had to have 2 horses put down.  There aren't any rendering plants where I live so you either take 'em to the sale barn (well, you 'used' to take them there) or you shoot 'em (I'm not good enough to do that from far away and don't have the 'guts' to do it up close and personal) or you call the vet out to euthanize.  I chose the latter.  The Vet cost me $100 and the backhoe to dig the hole and bury the horses cost me $100.  Both the horses had been great animals for me and could never have been able emotionally to take them to a sale.

That is the price for a cow, we haven't ever had to price a horse but you are probably right because they come out of Topeka and I think that is about halfway in between us.

DH kinda jokes about the fact that they have you put the $$ in a can near the dead animal.  He wonders how many people drive thru the country looking for carcasses with a can sitting nearby.

Our place used to come out of Sabetha but not sure where they are now.. probably the same one in Topeka.

We're on the list to move some 7 weight cull heifers on November 20th. Hopefully there's a huge rebound that week.

Holy moly! After I get done with fair and sell a few for 4-H prices, I'm gettin' $1.25 to $1.30. Fats for $1.17 looks pretty good to me.

Well I will say, sometimes it's better to get lucky than to be smart!  ;) Reason I say that is cause we sold us some yealrings this fall from $0.75 to $0.85. Wasn't too happy with those prices.
